Rep Chip Roy calls Biden/McCarthy debt ceiling deal a "turd sandwich"....

couldn't have said it better myself. McCarthy getting a big whiff of Biden's dirty Depends so he can get on his good side. Why does the House keep electing California dumbasses into leadership positions?

If there is nothing to address the border crisis then I hope it doesn’t pass. The border in the short and long term will be the disaster that leads to the downfall of our nation. I hope whoever wins the presidency has the balls to start rounding up all those who entered illegally and sending them out of the country. We cannot afford to put 15 million new people who have paid nothing in on government assistance. Besides all the terrorists, criminals and gang members Biden has escorted into our country. I wish the woman whose autistic daughter was murdered in Maryland by an illegal MS 13 gang member who was KNOWN before entry to be dangerous but was let in as an unaccompanied minor and transported by Biden to Maryland sues the shit out of Biden, Majorkas and the whole gang. If not for their willful incompetence and ignoring our immigration laws, their daughter would be alive. She should be able to sue both personally civil and criminally all those that allowed this. Biden and his crew make me physically sick! Their only goal is to take down the US and turn into a socialist , morally bankrupt society to be taken over by China. Biden and Majorkas have committed treason imo. In years past, they would have been prosecuted already.

Then you better campaign for DeSantis. He is certainly not perfect but best bet to get a reasonable budget and permanent security in place at budget.

In fairness to McCartney not sure he wanted to clean up the mess at boarder for Biden. This is Biden’s boarder mess, no one else. Let him own it and let it take him down….

if it's Biden's border mess and "no one else's" why did Trump think we needed a wall?

When Trump couldn’t get the wall thru Congress he pivoted and got the Mexican army to control parts of the boarder and curtail crossings to a manageable amount or close to a manageable amount. Biden changed the Policy so now we have NO control of anything at the boarder. Republicans see this as an election changer in 2024, thus they have no reason to assist Biden, it’s his mess, let him clean it up. He want clean it up ….

Agree with most everything you are saying, just think most all of what you are seeing is just posturing/drama (news/politicians). It will probably go down to the last hour with each side claiming victory.

Both sides have too much to lose if there is a default…….there will be a timely compromise reached imo.

It will be catastrophic to many if an agreement is not made/passed……and they all know it.

you see - the point is - the reason he wanted a wall is because there was already a problem and has been for years because one party won't work with the other to solve it (as you note) -

That's in part because they perceive it as good politics - their base is a basket of xenophobes who get excited when their "leaders" point the finger at illegal immigrants a) as if they are the source of all our problems and b) as if they are not also people, many of them fleeing war-torn / gang riddled nations that are screwed up in part because of American meddling in Latin America pretty much since we were a toddler nation. and c) as if it weren't a problem that has been going on pretty much since Bush was president.

Yes, we have issues with our immigration laws, but they aren't going to get better anytime soon until we come together and rewrite the laws - one - and - two - in fact they are likely to get much much worse as climate-driven dislocation continues to move populations.

The immigration laws do not need to be rewritten......the existing laws just need to be funded, staffed, and enforced. It's really that simple.

Good grief man, it's okay to open your eyes and give Trump some credit for what he did effectively. You can still hate him for being a mean tweeting, orange azzhole. Yes, there was a problem that has been purposefully ignored/promoted by both sides of the aisle. Both parties have had opportunities over the last 40 yrs to push through any border policy they wanted but instead played Kabuki theater.

Trump recognized the problem, proposed solutions that made sense but were killed by both sides and then adjusted in order to make the process more controllable. If getting control of the border, allowing migrants that posed no threat to cross and setting up an efficient, humane and effective monitoring and assistance program for new arrivals was a priority, it would have been done in the Reagan yrs. There are many other issues like immigration where both sides are playing the same game vs the middle (American voters) but this one issue is a prime example why a guy like Trump got support. More people need to get out of the tribal politics BS and realize they are getting tail piped by not just the other side, but their guy as well.

At least we agree on the non Trump stuff - Boehner and the the R house killed the bipartisan bill in 2013 - there has been no meaningful attempt at reform since.

as for the Trump stuff - I guess here comes the revisionism - like one of those oil paintings where Trump is all young and strong and thick chested.

Yet, you think its okay to call American citizens "a basket of xenophobes" for opposing criminal entry to the United States. I, for one, oppose human trafficking. I oppose the dramatic increase in fentanyl coming into the country. I oppose the 150% increase in cartel foot soldiers in my city. I oppose known terrorists and criminals who could not gain legal entry to this country coming across our Southern border unchecked. I also oppose the black market arms trade, facilitated by our open border. How very "xenophobic" of me.

We had the same laws during the Trump administration, with a lot more active enforcement and hence control. It got noticeably better every year until the current administration stopped construction, left billions in construction materials just sitting in the desert, reassigned border patrol officers to babysit illegals and cut their funding. They cut programs to support local law enforcement efforts at the border. They also cut surveillance programs so that they have no flipping idea who is entering in the broad, open, unpatrolled spaces between border checkpoints. Then started the effort to publicly humiliate officers doing their job.

I am also observant enough to not fall for the current regime's efforts to conflate immigration with illegal entry. I can tell you that many actual immigrants who earned their citizenship and Visa holders working here under the rules are deeply angered by that. Are they also in your "basket of xenophobes?"

just to take one item, most of the fentanyl's coming through legal ports of entry and is trafficked by US citizens. you know these things, so I am just noting that they are more complex as you say than we generally hear from people who pay attention to raw meat

it is a border problem not an immigration issue - and no one is arguing there aren't problems. It is a long border - and no the wall wasn't gonna fix that either - Fentynal became an issue during the pandemic as we all know, so it's not like Biden created the issue. seizures are up. it's always something

regarding the basket obviously I am talking about the R politicians who make it their business to conflate (as you note) and demonize and so many of the base who lap it up. you read their posts on here. you probably endure a lot of it where you live

and I am not going to worry about the feelings of xenophobes. if you aren't one, you aren't in the basket

If the problems were simple we would have handled them. but as I keep saying, pols prefer to stump

Sinaloa and CJNG (a.k.a. Jalisco) cartels have operations throughout the US. Don't think of them as being just in Mexico. They actually control both sides of the border in some places.
I alluded in my earlier post that presence in Phoenix has gone from 10,000 to 25,000+ since Biden took office.

I am excluding legally manufactured Fentanyl shipped to legit pharmaceutical companies from the following.
Components of Fentanyl and pill presses are shipped from China to Mexico and to the US. Some of this is considered legal because it is not the finished product. Shipments to the US can be used here or sent across the border to Mexico for final production. Sending anything South across the border has never been much of a problem. Going North used to be hard, now it is easy.

The truth is that we don't really know how much Fentanyl enters across the Southern border. The big shipments do not attempt to go through border checkpoints. They use the spaces in between, usually while there is a glut of people trying to cross and surrender to border patrol, which keeps them busy. A lot of it is added to other black market drugs, not as a separate item. This is how a lot of people get dead, because they weren't expecting a lethal dose of fentanyl in their black market oxy.
When you say seizures are up, that is certainly true. But the main reason seizures are up is that the traffic volume is way up.

Trump referred to the wall as the visual reference to his border control plan. He knew that he had to have a "sound byte" label, and he is very good at creating labels that stick. "Build that wall" was never just about the physical wall. It was always the combination of the wall itself (built to specification of US Border Patrol), personnel and technology. The difference it made was drastic, but not sudden. If Biden had simply continued the plan in place when he took office, we would be in a much different situation now.

One element you leave out in your discussion of Fentanyl, is that the reason that traffic volume is way up is because it is a relatively new problem 1) 2) it's easy to make and easy to disguise, not just in other illicit drugs but, more importantly, as pretty much any pill and 3) it is not as bulky as other drugs. Hence: most coming even through legal points of entry.

As for the wall as metaphor:

Trump was neither coherent, nor particularly consistent on the wall, imho, which was part of the problem. If he had sold it differently, it might have been less contentious, esp. if as you say he was talking about the sort of mix of physical and virtual measures that were on the table in 2013, things might have gone differently.

BUT he kicked off his tenure even before inagurated with the stupid travel ban.

You, Zonadog, are able to separate border issues from immigration issues, but Trump would not, and that's where we started in this thread> Trump using xenophobia to drive policies that he hadn't thought out very clearly -or- which were intended to incite the base vs. make productive sense -or- which seem in retrospect part of some big payola scheme. For profit dentention centers, for example, and later the wall fundraising schemes, for which he pardoned Bannon (with charges now pending in NYS).

Meanwhile, -legal- immigration is the tea seed oil that whets the blade of capitalism, and in addition to slashing green cards and delaying H1-B visas, etc. there are a host of things that were proposed in 2013 that are still relevant a) to keep American educated foreign born students here and b) to manage the many many needed ag workers and 3) to protect the border by physical and other means.

You can say the wall a metaphor if you want, and I appreciate that effort, but if it was a metaphor imho it was both unsophisticated, poorly sold, and ultimately self-defeating.

What's interesting is the GOP will never seek to fix the border issue for a couple reasons. Most of all because they have no incentive to fix it. They want chaos, so they can complain about it. If exaggerated rhetoric helps smugglers and encourages illegal entry, then that's a win.

Of course, the reality is that things are getting better: https://www.nbcnews.com/politics/im...-post-title-42-migrant-border-surge-rcna87325
