So far, considering:
1. Rescue dog of any medium to medium large variety.
2. Golden Retriever (wife loves every one she's ever been around)
3. Chesapeake Retriever (minimal shedding, good around water)
4. Standard Poodle (no fancy trim jobs, just natural, same +'s as Jesse the "Chessie")
5. Airdale (smart, no shedding, brave and can rumble)
6. Keeshond (likely too hairy and sheddy, but wife thinks they are beautiful)
7. Gordon Setter (great size and looks, but way too much hanging hair)

Appreciate your thoughts.......

We've had a Chesapeake Retriever. Pros, very obiedoant, easy to train, great around water, very loyal to one person. Cons, they shed more than you think, can be aggressive.

We rescued a lab/pit mix about 2 years ago. Best dog we've ever had!!

just got this guy on the right as a rescue dog...he's a mix, but sweet as he can be. only issue we've had is house training has been really really slow and he's hard to train but we keep working with him and giving him extra time. the one on the left is the best dog ever and whips his butt regularly , usually for something having to do with food or space on the dog couch

Rule of thumb: Short haired dogs shed and badly. Long haired dogs usually don't but need regular grooming.
Airdale's are a strange dog (friend had one) but they need grooming too to keep the "look".

I'd go for Retriever or a Goldendoodle. They're smart, etc. Best of both worlds with a 'noodle. Fun and cute dogs. For us, we keep at small to medium for traveling purposes. The bigger dogs don't seem to like road trips. Short ones to the store but not hours long.

Nothing whatsoever related to a pit. Not only unpredictable but if your insurance company finds out, they will eat you alive...like the dog.

Labs are the best.

Miniature Australian Shepherd. Great people dog, very smart, not too big, not a rat in a dog suit.

You can't go wrong with a Pug. Great little big dogs. Full of spirit, fun and love their family. German Shepherds are awesome also. Protective, SMART, loyal. Great dogs.

Get a full grown rescue dog. They are as good as any breed and slower to adopt than puppies.
If you have kids it's a great way to instill good values by walking the walk.

Goldendoodle. We have a Golden Retriever, too. Best dog ever but he sheds. The doodle doesn't shed. Ours sheds zero.

If you have time for a Vizsla, they are pretty neat dogs. It's a medium build Hungarian hunting dog. They have lots of energy and need to get in about an hour of exercise a day to burn off some energy. Short hair, so not much shedding and great with the kids. The dog is fast also. Can give a greyhound a run for its money. Ours will be 2 in November and still has a lot of puppy in her.

How much room do you have for them to run? Are you going to train and hunt them or just family dogs? Best dog I've ever owned (two now) are brittney spaniels. Males get 40 ish pounds and can handle anything and anyone. Plenty big. Small females may only get to 25-27 pounds. Most loving and friendly dog ever. They don't bark nearly at all. Only for things that they should bark at. We don't hear barking in our house maybe once a month and it's always a deer or coon etc... Shed minimally a little more in the summer. Can run forever or hang out in the couch. Need about a half acre for them to stretch their legs. Will outrun in distance and nearly speed almost any dog but we haven't had a problem with them not getting enough exercise. Just sweet natured, loving dogs. Highly recommend. Will point at birds. Beautiful thing to watch them stalk a McDonald's bird in your backyard.

Get a right sized dog for you. Turned out ours were smaller than I wanted and now I've changed my thoughts on it. My next dog will be a brittney also. Just love them

Boxer for me are one of the most loving family dogs ,little hard headed sometimes but smart anyway.

I've had 3 Labs. No other dog for me. They do shed, but nominal grooming required. Easiest dog to house train you'll ever see. Mine hasnt peed in the house since his first week here and has never pooped inside once.

Lots of good dogs suggested by others. Only one thing to remember..NO BEAGLES!
