The Messenger: College Basketball Picks Against the Spread: Saturday, January 13

“Tennessee (-7.5) at Georgia
Noon, ESPN2
Seth Davis: Don’t look now, but Mike White’s Bulldogs have won 10 in a row. Their 12-3 record includes wins over Wake Forest, Florida State, Missouri, and by 10 at home over Arkansas on Wednesday. Then again, the Dawgs also started 13-4 last season (3-1 SEC) and only won three games the rest of the way, so this game will tell us a lot about whether they’re for real. White’s starting lineup includes three seniors and a junior, and Georgia will need every bit of that veteran toughness to deal with a Tennessee squad that will be in a sour mood coming off a 77-72 loss at Mississippi State. The Vols couldn’t quite pull off the comeback, but they finally got a solid outing from leading scorer Dalton Knecht, the 6-foot-6 senior transfer from Northern Colorado who had gone cold the last couple of weeks but poured in 26 of his game-high 28 points in the second half. I’ll be surprised if Tennessee drops another one, but given how hard it’s been for teams to win conference games on the road this week, I’ll take the underdawgs to cover. Georgia (+7.5)

Jeff Goodman: The Vols are primed for a bounceback game after the loss at Mississippi State. I’m taking Tennessee to cover. Tennessee (-7.5)”

Shun Williams OTR: By this time, there is not even a casual follower of Georgia high school basketball that has not heard about Jacob Wilkins.

“Jacob Wilkins – Grayson High School – 2025

By this time, there is not even a casual follower of Georgia high school basketball that has not heard about Wilkins. The 6-9 wing lights up the social media platforms weekly with effortless dunks and youthful athleticism. The Georgia commit proved to be more than just a dunker in the Rams match-up with North Broward Prep. He showed touch in traffic and some nice moves in the open court. Wilkins is poised to be one of the most talked about basketball players to emerge from the Peach State in recent memory.”

SB Nation: Game Preview: Mizzou looks to put a mark in the win column as South Carolina comes to town

“3 Keys To The Game

#1 Bench scoring is going to be important here

It’s been an alarming issue the past couple games. Between the Georgia and Kentucky game combined, Mizzou has tallied 13 bench points in games where its scored 68 and 77 points. On the other hand the Bulldogs recorded 23 while the Wildcats posted 26. Dennis Gates on Friday said he was pleased with the plus-minus of guys such as Jesus Carralero-Martin, John Tonje and Mabor Majak, but he also said “We have to distribute our points in a better way. We need guys to play better.” Of course, the Tigers are going to get good offensive showings out of Sean East II, Tamar Bates, and Noah Carte, but it’s nice to have other offensive threats off the bench. Hopefully, with Anthony Robinson II returning, that area will be improved

#2 Don’t let this team get hot from behind the arc

As mentioned above Stute can fire away from behind the arc. Johnson can as well, as he leads the team with 30 3-pointers off a 34.9% percentage. Both Mack and Cooper can also execute from 3-point land. Whether it’s Seton Hall, who wasn’t known for making 3s, Illinois, or Georgia, Mizzou has let teams knock down the 3-ball willingly. Let’s just say it would be nice to see a team come into Mizzou Arena and get into a slump.

#3 It starts with communication

Defensively, Mizzou has allowed 90, 75, 97 and 93 in four of the previous five. While the offense has been okay the defense is far from a finished product. Jesus Carralero-Martin noted that particular phase of the game is something that needs to improve over the next couple of months.

You get to return home to face a team that got blown out by 27 points. Great. We haven’t seen this team play a close-to-complete game against a quality opponent since Wichita State. It seems that this team is so close but also still a tier below being able to compete for a full 40 minutes in the SEC. Mizzou will probably have the lead at some point throughout this game, the arena will be loud, but that also means the rough stretches and repetitive issues will show up once again. Mizzou keeps it close but falls to 0-3 in conference play.”

Duke
Zagsblog: Duke commit Cooper Flagg wows NBA executives at Hoophall Classic

“There has been some discussion about whether Flagg would hypothetically go No. 1 in this year’s draft if he were eligible — but at least one NBA scout believes Alex Sarr would go No. 1.

Sarr, a 7’1″ center who plays for the National Basketball League’s Perth Wildcats, is projected No. 1 by ESPN.com. The NBL is the top men’s pro basketball league in Australia and New Zealand.

“Cooper is very good but he would not be No 1,” the NBA scout said. “Watch highlights of Sarr in Austrailia and you tell me if Cooper is better than him now.”

The conversation is moot since Flagg will spend a year at Duke — trying to help Jon Scheyer win a national championship — before going to the NBA.”
