13 days until Georgia-Oregon...
Called by Ed Thilenius, the 13-yard Tarkenton-to-Herron touchdown remains one of the maybe top five, certainly top 10, Georgia plays of all time.
Known by most as UGA football's radio play-by-play man before Larry Munson, Thilenius was a distinguished broadcaster in his own right. Known for beginning every Bulldog broadcast by saying, "Think of your radio dial as your football field," he was “Voice of the Bulldogs” for 14 years from 1952-1965 before leaving to do CBS telecasts for the newly-formed Atlanta Falcons.
Thilenius, an Athens native, once told writer Tom McCollister, “I’ve made a lot of mistakes in my life but the worst professional mistake I made was running to the pros and leaving the Georgia football [radio] network. I didn’t know it then but those were the best years of my life.”
Thilenius passed away in 1981 of hepatitis at only 57 years old.
