Asa Newell has consistently hovered in the 8-12 range on my big board throughout the season. He is an exceptionally talented, highly athletic forward prospect with a strong track record of high-level performance. Newell’s presence on the floor is undeniable, as he consistently contributes to winning basketball on both ends.

This season for Georgia, Newell is averaging 15.2 points per game on efficient shooting splits of 56.2% from the field, 27.7% from three, and 73.2% from the free-throw line. Additionally, he is pulling down 7.0 rebounds per game while providing defensive impact with 2.1 stocks (steals + blocks) per game.

From an advanced statistical perspective, Newell ranks in the 86th percentile in overall field goal attempts, showcasing his efficiency as a scorer. He thrives as a high-energy player, ranking in the 74th percentile on cuts and an impressive 88th percentile in post-up situations. However, one area of his game that could use further development is his effectiveness as a pick-and-roll roll man, where he currently ranks in the 15th percentile.

Despite this, Newell presents a compelling upside as a 6’11” stretch big, particularly if he can refine his outside shooting. While his three-point percentage remains a work in progress, his shooting mechanics appear sound and projectable for the next level.

Given his combination of size, athleticism, and two-way impact, I expect Newell to solidify himself as a lottery prospect, likely being selected in the 6-12 range. With so much room to continue developing his game while already being highly productive, he offers significant long-term value as a prospect.

Labaron Philon was listed as questionable on Friday evening in the latest SEC athlete availability report for Saturday’s game against Georgia

Nate Oats told reporters earlier in the day that the freshman guard was still dealing with the nagging foot and ankle injury, which has seen USF transfer Chris Youngblood take his place in the starting lineup as of late.

Nate Oats wants Alabama basketball to give Georgia - and everyone else - 'full respect'

Oats questioned why players "aren't getting ourselves up" when playing for fans at home, saying he doesn't understand Alabama's not giving "the same type of respect to some of the opponents."

"It's a little frustrating. I'd like to see us come in and show the same respect to Georgia because they deserve it," Oats said. "I mean, this team's beat Kentucky, it was a two point game with Auburn, who's the best team in our league, metric-wise, by a long shot. So this team is needs our full respect."

Then, the word "mature" popped up again.

"We've tried to tell them," Oats said. "I hope we play with the sense of urgency and effort that it takes to be a really good team like Georgia."

Oats appreciates the "sense of urgency" on the road. He just wants to see it at home when Alabama and Georgia (15-6, 3-5) tip off at 3 p.m. CT in Coleman on Saturday.

"We just got to come up with the same level of respect in every game," Oats said.

Alabama basketball leads the nation in possessions per game (78.4).

UGA 2026 Recruiting

“I speak with Coach (Antonio Reynolds) Dean, he’s got me really understanding how badly they want to win and how it matches my mentality of wanting to win everything and beat everyone. I think my style of play really fits them in a lot of ways on the court. I’ve been watching Georgia for a while now, as you saw they just took Auburn to the wire (in a 70-68 loss).”
