Southwest Times Record: Arkansas basketball vs. Georgia: Scouting report, prediction as Hogs face Bulldogs

“Arkansas basketball must limit turnovers

Careless giveaways were a huge issue for the Hogs in their first matchup with the Bulldogs. Georgia scored 25 points off 15 Arkansas turnovers, with 14 of those points coming in the first half as the Bulldogs built a 10-point advantage they would not relinquish.

Arkansas' point-guard play has been up-and-down all season, but Keyon Menifieild Jr. and Layden Blocker need to play efficiently on Saturday if Arkansas wants revenge. The Razorbacks can't provide easy transition buckets, and the struggling offense needs to maximize its shot attempts.

Will Georgia have an answer inside?

The Bulldogs primarily play four-guard lineups and look to space opposing defenses from three-point range. While that could be a challenge for the Arkansas defense, Georgia might also be susceptible at the other end.

Georgia is allowing an average of 41.5 paint points during its ongoing four-game losing streak. Arkansas' newfound strategy of looking inside for offense worked against Missouri before failing at LSU. It could be a successful avenue against the Bulldogs, with Makhi Mitchell and Jalen Graham poised for big games.

What will Arkansas get from Davonte Davis?

Davis will return to the floor Saturday after stepping away from the program and missing three games. The Razorbacks went 1-2 without the senior guard, continuing a middling season.

Davis simply must play better. He wasn't a reliable presence on either end of the floor and was having the worst offensive season of his career before his brief hiatus. Arkansas needs the hero of last year's NCAA Tournament run to bring new life in his return.

Prediction: Arkansas 77, Georgia 73

There are only a handful of SEC teams I'd pick Arkansas to beat right now, but Georgia is one of them. The Bulldogs are playing just as poorly as the Razorbacks, and Arkansas will have the home-court advantage Saturday. This is also the Razorbacks' best chance at a victory over the next two weeks, with No. 6 coming to Tennessee Wednesday before back-to-back road games against Mississippi State and Texas A&M.

Arkansas basketball has new plays in store for Georgia

“When the University of Arkansas men’s basketball team plays Georgia for a second time this season, the Razorbacks will have something new for the Bulldogs.

Arkansas, which lost at Georgia 76-66 on Jan. 10, has a week to get ready for the rematch Saturday at Walton Arena.

The Razorbacks (11-11, 2-7 SEC) don’t play a mid-week game, while the Bulldogs (14-8, 4-5) play at Mississippi State tonight.

“We added a different play package [in practice] than we’ve had,” Arkansas Coach Eric Musselman said Monday night on his radio show. “So whatever we run will be some things that Georgia hasn’t seen.

“Now it’s up to us to execute them properly and make shots and set better screens and all of that. But we will be adding some things, because we do have a little bit more time than usual.”

Musselman also announced on his show senior guard Davonte “Devo” Davis returned to the Razorbacks for Monday’s practice after stepping away from the program and missing the previous three games when Arkansas lost at home to No. 17 Kentucky 63-57, won at Missouri 91-84 and lost at LSU 95-74.

Arkansas redshirt sophomore forward Trevon Brazile, averaging 8.9 points and a team-high 6.5 rebounds, has missed the past three games because of knee soreness. He has been sitting out since the second half of Arkansas’ 77-51 loss at Ole Miss on Jan. 24.

Musselman said Brazile hasn’t practiced since prior to the Ole Miss game.

“We’re hopeful that the knee feels better,” Musselman said. “It has not. There’s been days that it feels good, and then there’s been other days it’s still sore and bothering him.

“So no update, no practice. He’s really not doing much other than shooting. He has been trying to warm up with the team pregame the last couple games, but that’s just to stay involved.”

Kansas
Topeka Capital Journal: Amid NCAA’s uncertain future, Kansas basketball coach Bill Self shares his perspective

“Would I like to be on the forefront of making decisions?” Self said. “In theory, I think I’ve got some good ideas. But I don’t think that I’m going to go lobby before Congress to come up and figure out, ‘Hey, what do you think, Self, on how this?’ — That’s not going to happen, and certainly with what I’ve gone through the first five years they’re not going to ask me anyway. So, I’m not going to spend a lot of time worrying about some crap that they’re not even going to ask me about.”

Self added the current state of affairs is at a point where everything across college athletics is “up in the air.” Like any business, he mused, it’s a situation where how things look now aren’t going to be how they look five years from now. Although he didn’t provide specifics at the same level he did college athletics, and could have been naming the first industries that came to mind, he brought up the pharmaceutical and trucking industries as ones that have also gone through change in recent years.

One of the more prominent pieces of recent news that led to this discussion with Self was the ruling that allowed the Dartmouth men’s basketball team to move toward unionization. Self cautioned that he’s not as up to speed on the ruling as some might be, but noted there are a lot of people on the administrative side of things in the industry who think that’s the direction things are moving.

It’s not just unionization that’s a topic that’s on his mind, but employee status, Title IX and the name, image and likeness (NIL) space.

“I think it’s so up in the air and so indecisive that it makes it hard for people to operate, not knowing certain things,” Self said. “You’ve got the Tennessee situation still out there, and that’ll certainly impact NIL moving forward depending on what that ruling is. And so, it’s just like — it’d be nice in two years from now or three years for now that it’s actually settled down and this is exactly how we know it’s going to be.”
