Just putting this here for those of you who would like to watch it.

I've said it many times, and I will say it again: the mRNA-1273 vaccine by Emory, the NIH, and CDC is going extremely well. One of my primary doctors said "we are seeing 100% success with the production of antibodies thanks to the vaccine." The quotes are there for a reason; I still remember her saying those exact words. It was a huge relief to know our country will eventually defeat this. I have also heard they are already actively preparing for mass production of this particular vaccine.

Please try your best to limit the negativity on this thread. Whether you like Fauci, masks, democrats or republicans, this thread was simply meant to provide a quick update.

Thank you for linking this. I respect and support Dr. Fauci, understand the criticism that he receives on this board, and also understand the incredibly tough position he is in, given his role in this pandemic.

Is it typical in a scientific study of this nature for the kind of information your doctor has shared with you to be spread to the subjects in said study? I’m not saying it’s not but rather just that I didn’t know that’s how these things worked. I also didn’t know it was possible for any such study to have a 100% success rate on the first go around. That seems like great news. I look forward to seeing the published results once they are peer reviewed. It sounds like this would be the first thing of this entire crisis that isn’t a complete cluster fock. I hope it isn’t too good to be true.

wondering the same. seems odd. disclaimer likely has details

us govt sent out $6 billion to companies to get this vaccine done, and it appears Moderna is tied in to this particular grouping with $486 million from us govt

shoulda got stock in moderna in march or april. 52 week high of 80+ and 52 week low of 11+. looks like they may have been in the 20s in late march.

Have difficulty understanding why the response to the the Coronavirus has become such a politicized issue. Seems like this would be an effort we could all get behind.
It’s not that hard to understand. It’s an election year and we are more polarized than any time in our nation’s history.

The right wing has convinced their denizens that:
- The virus is a hoax, no worse than the flu
- Wearing a mask means you are a socialist sycophant
- Any measures taken to distance/mitigate are intentional efforts to destroy the economy

The left wing has convinced their denizens that:
- The virus is more deadly than our limited data indicates
- Those who don’t wear a mask are murders, unless engaged in certain protests
- Any type of actuarial decision making about risk and reopening is akin to genocide

As I learned from a great comms prof at UGA, once you believe the other side is evil, you can’t have a debate, much less a conversation.

My main concern for the vaccine is the cost. If they try to make it more expensive than the flu shots, etc, then I believe many people won't get it. They have to get the manufacturers of the vaccine and the insurance companies on the same page and make this affordable to all.

I imagine if a vaccination that is deemed to be beneficial is produced that the government will do everything within its power to help that side of things.

My concerns involve other aspects of it.

Yes, there are other aspects of it too that could cause concern, I agree.

What ever. I do not remember various types of flu shots during past epidemics being divisive. They gave them to us in elementary school.

This is extremely well said. Logical thought has gone out the window these days & folks on either side of the fence fall in line with whatever their party has to say on any issue regardless of how crazy said issue actually is.

There are two states in the US who have a downward trend on the virus. I live in one of them and am driving to the other one today.

If any people have read my postings concerning the way RI is responding to Covid-19 then you should know that this state does not play around. We reacted quickly and with authority and had a comprehensive state policy. We insist on people wearing masks. Apparently people don't believe the data from other countries - that wearing a mask dramatically reduces the spread of the virus. Well, here's data from one of the toughest mask requirement states in the country proving it is working. We have managed to do this while we are inundated with tourists - you are in our state, you play by our rules.

You want a return to normalcy? Want to watch some football? Get the numbers down. Wear a freaking mask.

Thank you for your post. But more importantly, on behalf of my family and I THANK YOU for making yourself a test subject for this vaccine. I am grateful for people like you who volunteered to help all of humanity.

There is a lot of truth in what you say. The polarization gets overstated because that reinforces what each side wants you to believe about the other.

Because many people don't deal with the world for how it is as they'd rather deal with how they think it should be.

We see sh*tshows all the time, but this is what it looks like when a virus that doesn't care about politics and personal desires is center stage.

In the part where he talks about the vaccine - he says that even if the vaccine is very effective (75-80%), we still have to combine it with public health measures. Does he mean social distancing is still in effect even after a vaccine? Or just test, isolate, contact tracing?

I hope he means the latter. Doesn't make sense to push a very effective vaccine then act like it's not effective.

I would get comfortable with social distancing for quite a while. It will likely continue to be necessary even with an effective vaccine because of low adoption rates for the vaccine. I believe the take rate for the flu shot is somewhere in the 40-45% range. I don’t expect the rate for the COVID shot to be much higher.

I’ve felt that I won’t be in Sanford or any other sporting venue this fall for a while, but if that’s still the case even after a vaccine is out... well... that would really suck.

My take is I am washing my hands more doing the zinc thing and making sure my vitamin D levels are good. I wish we could hear more suggestions like that. I don't particular trust a lot of what hear. I know several people that have had virus of all different age groups and they all recovered. I personally don't know of anyone who has died of the covid that was strictly related to Covid all the people i know that died very sick before they con-tracked the virus.
I will obey the law even if I don't agree with it. Personally I would like to be free to make my own choices and hang with like people . I think the people that fear this virus need to stay end or do whatever they can do to protect themselves.
If i am hanging with people that like minded if we get it we get it and no one
really cares because we would rather live free and death will happen to all of at sometime. I am not saying a I am right or wrong that's just how I feel

I think it’s likely to be much greater, at least in the 50+ group. I’ve never had a flu shot in my life and probably won’t. I also never get the flu..and now I’ve jinxed myself. This pandemic has been completely more disruptive than flu cycles so the vaccine is going to be front and center media wise. I’d take tha vaccine for no other reason than I’d take the odds of 70% effectiveness in concert with the overall general probability of coming in contact with someone contagious. It will really cut down the odds.

The other reason to take it is psychological confidence. A vaccinated population will see the infection rates drop and you’ll see a faster return to something approximating normalcy when the public feels they no longer have to worry about getting it or being hospitalized.

As the vaccines become available, you start with the highest risk groups and ironically I might go after the youngest that move around and spread it without personal impact and maybe cut it off at the knees.

The whole “live free” thing is so misguided. If you go to a grocery store or pharmacy or other retail stores that are necessity, you are part of an ecosystem that includes all minded people.

I do expect it to be much higher. The flu doesn’t really disrupt our lives and there isn’t nearly as much (or any) “fear porn” out there over the flu. I’d honestly expect about 60-70% of adults who are offered will take a covid vaccine within a year. I’m sure some will wait to see how it affects others, but I think the vast majority will ultimately want to receive it.

I just think this thing has been mismanaged as far as information goes. What I don’t understand is why doesn’t the CDC ( or anyone who knows wtf they are talking about) , do a daily press conference and tell us what the numbers really mean? Who in the hell is in charge. Once we decided that we had enough information in the Spring , all press conferences stopped.

I mean , who is in charge here? Shouldn’t the CDC tell us what to expect, what does death rate really mean, how should we respond , do we need to wear masks( yes we do)? Someone needs to take charge here. I think people are scared because they don’t know what to believe. Many people also don’t trust the media , but that’s an entire other conversation.

Does "100% success with the production of antibodies" mean that those persons are protected from getting Covid-19?

Nobody is in charge and that’s the problem.

We are a family of 5. The kids and I always get a flu shot. My wife will not. She is convinced the flu shot gives her the flu. I know she is not the only one. Sadly, I think your projection may be on the money for people getting vaccinated.

I think there’s hope for it to be more successful than that. The reason the flu shot has numbers as low as that is because there are a multitude of strains of it & every year the experts guess based on models which 3 or 4 will be most prevalent & make the vaccine based on that. Sometimes years the guesses turn out better than the previous. Since so far this doesn’t appear to be the case with COVID or coronaviruses in general, hopefully the vaccine will be more effective.

I think that is still TBD.
Agreed. We won’t know until more time passes. Worth it to point out that, to my knowledge, there have been no reported cases of someone contracting the virus twice, so we can be hopeful that immunity is strong after development of antibodies.

Are there people still genuinely worried about COVID? I thought it was common knowledge there would be a second spike after re-opening. Other than it being expedited by riots, what has changed?
According to the GA DPH, we are trending towards 2x the number of new cases than the previous peak, so that is concerning. I know one of the prominent hospitals in metro Atlanta’s ICU was at 88% capacity earlier this week, also concerning.

I don’t know if I’m worried as much as I’m concerned about the trends in the data. We will know what’s what in the next 10-14 days.
