In 2003, the murder of one player at Baylor by another opened the door to a devastating amount of cheating and scandal about the basketball team and head Coach Dave Bliss. Bliss was given a 10-year show-cause penalty and Baylor was placed on heavy restrictions and recruiting issues for 4 years.
In 2003, Jim Harrick, Jr. was caught paying $300 for Tony Cole's expenses. Then it was found Cole was given an A in the basketball theory class Harrick, Jr. taught, as well as 3 other players that never attended the class. Harrick, Jr. was suspended, then fired, and Harrick, Sr. was told his contract would not be renewed so he quit. UGA was placed on 4 years probation and Harrick, Sr. was given a 7-year Show Cause Penalty.
Baylor didn't have a winning season for 4 years. UGA hired Felton. Felton famously got us to the 2008 NCAA tournament by winning the SECC in unbelievable fashion. He was fired at the end of 2009 and CMF was hired. At Baylor, Scott Drew was hired in 2007 and the 2008 team went to the NCAA tourney and the 2009 team finished 2nd in the NIT.
2010 - Baylor Elite 8 of the NCAA Tourney
- UGA Finished 14-17 but beat 3 teams ranked top 25 when we played them.
2011 - Baylor missed any post season play
- UGA Made the NCAA tourney and lost in the first round to Washington
2012 - Baylor Elite 8 of the NCAA Tourney
- UGA - No postseason play
2013 - Baylor wins the NIT
- UGA No postseason play
2014 - Baylor Sweet 16 apperance of the NCAA Tourney
- UGA lost in the 2nd round of the NIT
2015 - Baylor, ranked, lost famously to GaState in the first round of the NCAA tourney
- UGA Lost in the first round of the NCAA to Mich St
2016 - So far, Baylor is ranked and UGA is not close to being ranked.
Also, Baylor has had some pretty good football teams over all these years, so they are not "just a basketball school".
I put this out there, 1 because we play them Sat, but 2 just to further the debate about how long it takes to turn a program around with the right coach. Is 7 years enough? Baylor didn't make it to the post season every year under Drew, but when they do, they typically do better than we have.
I would say that 2016, even after losing two senior bigs, that I expected a post-season run. While the season is not over, we are in danger of not making it, with a very tough schedule remaining with 4 games vs ranked teams all but 1 on the road) and another game vs the #1 draft pick and possibly the #1 player in the country. So, losses to teams we could have beat are troublesome, KState, Ole Miss, Chattanooga just to name 3 that had we won, we might be knocking on the door of #25, but we didn't beat them.
So, where do you think we are after 7 years of CMF vs the last 7 of Baylor? Why can we not be where they are, and can we get there with CMF?
