-Obviously, we lost that one at the plate. Just way too many empty at-bats. I wrote this morning that we didn't play a great offensive game yesterday either, but we made the most of our chances when we got them. Didn't do that today... some of our young guys are really fighting it right now.... It's disappointing though as the pitching matchup today really favored us. Davis Daniel's numbers were pretty bad coming into this weekend, but he is in their rotation for a reason.... Still, on paper, this one did point our way. But then, yesterday's matchup favored them, probably to a larger degree.
-I think that the opposition is now 26/30 in stolen base attempts against us. I'm surprised teams don't run more.... When you see a stat like that, you probably think our catching is weak. I really don't think it's that.... It looks to me like a lot of these steals are coming off our pitchers. As much as we like to throw over, we really seem to fall asleep at times with the run game. Both of Auburn's steals today, we didn't have a chance to throw him out from behind the plate.... We really need to tighten that up.
-I didn't like the substitution at 1B today when we made it.... The error that went on Schunk in the top of the 9th never should have shown up... we have to play that ball better at 1B and I think that Sasser probably does. As a team right now, we are fielding .954. That's pretty bad... I don't think that we need to sacrifice too much defense, especially when there's not a significant upgrade offensively. Adam Sasser needs to be the guy there... And they need to work with him on shortening his swing and going the other way. Easier said than done, and I hope that's what they're doing already... but he does need to be the guy at 1B.
-I was a little surprised when we brought in Tucker Bradley to start the 9th. It seemed like Blakely Brown did a really nice job at LSU last Sunday... it was surprising to not see him until things were unraveling in the 9th inning.
-We scored 6 runs this weekend and Auburn put up a 0 in 22 of 27 innings that we pitched to us this weekend. I guess when you look at it that way, you feel good about getting one. I really don't think that we're going to struggle to this extent to score runs most weekends.... On the other side, it's a positive that we pitched as well as we did this weekend. This was definitely our best weekend on the mound. We'll play better offensive teams than Auburn, but we'll play some weaker teams too.
-Just gotta keep grinding. Nobody wanted to be 10-15/ 1-5... We have arguably our most winnable mid week game of the season on Tuesday night, then we go to Knoxville and play a Tennessee team who is really struggling right now. There is no such thing as a breather at this time of the season, but we can win some of these games coming up this week.
Edit: I meant to add this. Today was the first game that Miss RedRain has been able to attend with me. She made the comment early on (she's pretty sharp sports-wise) that "you guys need to swing the bat." She mentioned a few more times... And she was right. We took an awful lot of pitches today that looked very hittable. She says, and I agree, that we need to be more aggressive at the plate. There's a difference between being aggressive and being stupid... We talked about it a few times after her initial comment and I definitely think she's onto something.
