For me, my insurance has steadily being going up for at least 25 yrs and even more so in the last 10 yrs. About the only thing that changed this year is copay went from 20 to 30 and hospital deductible from 150 to 250. However, in exchange for that, there are several things basically free now that we've taken advantage of. And lots of "wellness" type things. And for the 1st time, we had another option besides Blue Cross. BUT......the other plan did not have our primary GP who I don't want to give up. So we stuck with Blue Cross even though it's costing 60 dollars more a month. I have 2 pre existing conditions so that was important. Also important, if my spouse ever leaves his employment, with the pre existing conditions, I know I can always get healthcare. It's important. Unless you've experienced (we have) a catastrophic illness with over a month's hospital stay, the bills that cost, it's hard for most to understand. That was back in the mid 00s before ACA. We are very happy with a PPO or HMO plan instead of 80/20.

There are good and bad things with ACA. Some of it inflicted by DC and some by the governors. But mostly from the greedy healthcare industry, imo. Until they get pharmaceuticals, some shady hospitals and billing practices, etc. (why in the hell Bush allowed no contracts, pricing, etc. when he expanded Medicare to cover drugs, etc.) and the non stop lobbying of them and buying campaigns, and elected representatives taking their $$ (both parties), nothing is going to get better, imo. No matter who is President or what they try to do.

No nausea pill taken twice a day should cost $3700.00 for a 30 day supply. And THAT was in 2004.

So how much am I looking at if I was to go off on my own?
Me and the boy are on my group plan at work. Wife is on State Employee plan.
Don't I have to go on the wife's if it is available?

I don't know. I was JUST thinking that same thing the other day and never checked. I'm pretty sure the employee has to take the employer plan. Will let you know when I find out.

prof. john gruber of mit , helped design obamacare , and he stated that the only way this bill
passed was because of " the stupid American voter " . that doesn't sound good for what's coming
at us , just waiting for the full impact . I'm afraid we all will be paying more for less and finding it more difficult
to get in to see the dr. . what galls me, is people like Pelosi will not go on obamacare ; but she wants us to
participate . this whole thing is distressing .

Not getting into the obamacare debate but Americans on average are quite stupid. See above link. I think in standardized test we are now behind Croatia. Something like 33 rd in the world. To allege we have an educated populace on average is just not true.

people like Pelosi will not go on obamacare>>

She's old enough to be on Medicare. Used to be, don't know if still true as I'm not there yet, but back about 10 yrs ago, Medicare HAD to be your primary coverage.

lump, I just used Pelosi as an example because she pushed so hard for this scam . what I should have said is that liberal members of congress
are resisting obamacare and have said they want to keep their " govt Cadillac plans " ...........but they say it's good for us !

Its not the HC industry, its not Big pharma, its not even insurance companies. Its all Govs faulty. Its Gov that forced insurance on the ppl in the first place. Its Gov that blocked the ppl from buy insurace across state lines. There is NOTHING good about obamacare, and nothing affordable about it. We've changed the way we deal with Gov with this MESS. Now Gov can make the ppl BUY WHAT THEY DEEM NESSARY. Whats good about that?

You don't have to go on wife's plan but State Health, at least in Georgia, still subsidizes the entire family premium. You are not eligible for a federal subsidy because your spouse has access to "affordable care".

still subsidizes the entire family premium.>>

We're on it and no they don't. In fact, as of Jan 1, state cut how much they were paying. Used to be 75 percent for years, now it's around 60.

There may be a difference in UGA's insurance and regular state employees, I better add. But pretty sure I read the legislature cut the state's part. Teachers were MAD.

McGruber approves......gradulations. Sing it's praises all you want but it will implode. Now, please go my my groceries for me.

In Dodge County they are still subsidizing 75% of the premium. Many companies now only subsidize the employee only, not the spouse and children.

Well, now that's it forced, something still needs to be done about pharma, hospitals and others in healthcare industry. Back in 07, I had to get a congressman involved while my dad was dying in a SW GA hospital. The hospital was lying about some things, in fact, the #2 guy at Medicare in McLean, VA (thanks to the Congressman who put me in touch) said it was fraud. So was a nursing home (lying) the hospital was wanting to send him to. If I had not researched before the event, I wouldn't have known. And I imagine they are taking advantage of many, many seniors at a most vulnerable time. I know another friend of mine had gone through the same thing with a hospital in Savannah. But his brother was a lawyer, knew the Medicare laws and that was that for the hospital, when he threw it back at them. PSA if you have an aging parent. From having had the experience a few years ago(and some things could have changed) :

1) IF the hospital says "Medicare wont pay, you have to go to a nursing home TODAY", they're lying. Medicare sends a certified letter to your home and you have 5 days to move them OR appeal. There are a few exceptions where they will send letter to hospital but the hospital MUST show you and you still have a right to appeal before moving them.

2) If nursing home is an approved Medicare provider, it is against the law for them to ask for thousands of dollars in advance of patient arriving. (what they claim is estimated charges for a month..they wanted it in advance) They MUST take them. (and my dad had secondary insurance from his former employer...they didn't care) My mother almost did it (pay 7000.00) till I intervened after the Congressman who put me in touch with the right person at Medicare. At the time, he said he wanted to do an "official" Congressional investigation, but there is paperwork involved, something he said at the time we didn't need to do. (going through an imminent death) BUT he said he could make an "inquiry" via phone and did. Suddenly, we were right, they were wrong, it was a "miscommunication". Yeah, right. Seriously, after our experience, read up on it so you can be knowledgeable when the time comes and not be taken advantage of.

Lastly, don't pay a THING after it's all over to the hospital until you get a Medicare statement, which unfortunately, comes out every 3 mos. Tell them you aren't paying till you have your Medicare statement. 2 problems here. 1) Hospital will bill some charges over and over for the same thing. 2) Medicare will pay it anyway. So will a supplementary policy. We compared and got $23,000.00 back for the insurance company, something THEY and Medicare, should have done themselves.

I'm not saying all hospitals, HC industry as a whole are as crooked as the one we dealt with. But I know of 2 in GA that are. I suspect there are many here and across the country. It's nothing new. Look at the trouble Gov Scott was in for defrauding Medicare. That's the one off the top of my head that made the news several years ago.

Sorry for the length of this. I really would hate for anyone to go through what we went through so wanted to make sure to give you good info.
