They sure did get quiet.
I was in the "This is not the year to do this" camp, with the one injury they had that they could not have and the 'evolving' QB situation. I'm surprised, but not shocked. I'm of the opinion that this might have happened last year were it not for Morehead's intervention and that 2015 was the "or else" year. It apparently wasn't good enough to dissuade the AD from the decision he had already made in his own mind. I understand the decision. Richt's record against ranked competition was near .500 since 2008 and his record against elite competition poor. He always seemed to be a bit disengaged from the details and the small things. He made an uninspiring hire as OC and probably gave him too much slack to soon. The special teams were always a question mark. There were the blowouts against the elite teams and the inexplicable lapses in the big games going back to 2007 and appearing too frequently and always at the most inopportune moment (FL 2014, SC 2014, Tech 2014, SC 2012, AL 2008, FL 2008, SC 2007, TN 2007, TN 2006). The exception was the Alabama SECC game. But there also were some great wins (AU 2014, LSU 2013, FL 2012, FL 2011, AU 2011). I admired him and the way he ran his ship. He was a good ambassador for UGA football, as was Vince Dooley. Richt recruited very well, but didn't always keep his talent. He developed some good QB's and, with few exceptions, fielded a potent offense most every year. There there were a couple of notable runs where it was there for the taking. You had to believe, as I did, that given the right circumstances in the future, a situation like 2007 or 2012 could have been that one increment better. It's happened to lesser or equal coaches (Miles, Brown, Chizik, Fisher). The guys who make the money to make the decisions and the big money that they listen to apparently did not. The Florida game, starting Bauta, showed me that they were rolling the dice because they thought they had no choice. They salvaged the year after that. Thank you, Mark Richt. You left the program in better shape than you found it. Now its time to turn the page. My first choice would be Dan Mullen. My second choice Kirby Smart.
