In 1966 UK signed five HS all-americans. UGA signed three and an honorable mention. In 1967 our frosh team traveled to Lexington to play one of the most anticipated frosh games in conference history. There were lines around Memorial Hall beginning early in the morning for the afternoon tip-off. We played at 3:00 I believe and the varsity game was set for 7:00. The morning papers had featured articles about the match-up of the high scoring clubs and the face-off between our All_American center Bob Lienhard vs their post man Dan Issell. Memorial Gym held 8,000 or so, but it was overflowing.
The game did not disappoint anyone, except our team. But, it is still maybe the most fun I've ever had in an organized basketball game in my life. It had everything you could ask for....numerous slam dunks (this was the last year it was legal) for seven seasons. Incredible scoring, blocks, no telling how many assists. Several lead changes and close until the last couple minutes when free throws expanded the margin. Final score UK 113-UGA 100.
