shots I've ever seen on a basketball court. It's 1968, my soph year at UGA, and we're playing the Tigers at their place. There were several really crappy facilities in the sec at the time, but the barn had the worst. It was an ancient hangar type building made of corrugated something. All the seats were bleacher type and it maybe could seat 3,000 - 4,000. It was also cold as hell in that place.
So we are warming up doing our two line layup drill. As always in that s...hole a bunch of Auburn football players would sit in the row right behind the visitor's bench and try to harass and intimidate them. Unfortunately for the clowns, Ray Jeffords was on our team and I'm sure Ray has never been intimidated in his life. I've got a lot stories about Ray and related one about the Creswell dining hall a while back. He was as tough and mean, when he wanted to be, as anyone I've ever met. Ray was 6'5, 220lbs, and really strong Anyway as we're taking our layups there is one dude who is really loud and cussing and generally trying to be a badass. Tom Superka was in line right in front of me and had been taking the pass from Ray to shoot his layup. Ray told Superka to step back out of the way next time around. So when Tom's turn comes Ray dribbles towards him as if to handoff a pass, Tom steps away. The loudmouth is hollering and not really paying attention. Ray winds up and delivers a baseball pass from about 10 feet that catches the fool right in his face. He flies backwards, blood spurting from his nose and mouth all over him and some of the others. Ray is just standing there staring at them as they are screaming at him. Some cops came over and stopped anything from going further. They carried the guy out and the game ensued.
Ray could throw a basketball and hit the ceiling in the Steg. I've never seen anyone else do it. Everyone tried, but nobody really came close
