1. Ted Williams - .344; 521; 1839; Teddy Ballgame, The Splendid Splinter; Some list Ruth as No. 1, more on that next. TW was, IMHO, the best HITTER in MLB, not the best player, outfielder or teammate, but the best hitter. His philosophy of hitting was reduced to a science; his approach was more widely copied than anyone; he had the best eyes in baseball. If the years missed in military service are factored in to his totals, he would have 701 HRs, 2520 RBIs, .350 BA.
2.Babe Ruth - .342; 714; 2213; I believe BR is the best player in MLB history, including his years as a pitcher; he was an elite pitcher and was considered, possibly, the best in MLB from 1915-18; he was such a great hitter and hit such LONG homeruns, he wanted to give up pitching so he could play everyday. But TW was a better hitter IMHO.
3. Ty Cobb - .367 (best by far); 117; 1944; TC’s 892 stolen bases and his aggressive style of base running made him a much greater threat at the plate; Cobb is considered the best player in MLB by many and was the first player voted in to the HOF.
4. Lou Gehrig - .340; 493; 1995;
5. Stan Musial - .331, 475; 1951
HONORABLE MENTION: Mel Ott, Tris Speaker, Joe Jackson, Duke Snider, Eddie Matthews, Tony Gwynn, Carl Yastzremski, Wade Boggs, Rod Carew, Jim Thome, David Ortiz, Joe Morgan, Ken Griffey Jr., Todd Helton, George Brett, Will Clark
