I routinely read 130s/low-90s or high-80s. I know that qualifies as pre-hypertension or stage 1 or whatever. This is with one of those battery-operated cuff readers that I use at home, for what that's worth.

I really don't want to start taking blood pressure medication. I am on yet another campaign to try to exercise regularly. My wife and I try to do that as often as possible. But life gets busy and gets in the way more often than I'd like.

80 is fine, consistently 90 and above is medicine time if you can't

control it with exercise and diet. Never take it right after drinking coffee. If you smoke, quit.

regular cardio helps big time..

I get to the gym at least 3 times a week to ride this torture device they call the eliptical machine. :)

at least 30 minutes mid level settings, ROLLING hills...gets me much more of a work out than a simple one hour walk.

that said, drink more BOURBON. You won't GAS about it.

Yeah.... I do have a pretty good diet. I don't drink Cokes & try to...

... keep sugars to a minimum. I do eat candy once in a while but sparingly. I don't smoke.

Coffee is one thing that I do drink, a lot. Maybe I should go on a test run, go a week or two without it and see what happens.

Exercise is definitely something I need to do, though, especially at my age.

Exercise as simple as 30-40 minute walks

brisk enough to get 2 miles in and do it 4 times a weeks. Squeeze in a few Veggie smoothies in during the week for breakfast and you will see a difference, imo!

Sit quietly for a couple of minutes before you take it. Take it a second

time to make sure you are relaxed.
Good luck getting and keeping it down. Fortunate mine has always been low, but my hubby had to get his down with meds.

Yeah, I give myself time in a chair before taking it. I think one of...

... my issues is drinking coffee. I need to try going a week or two without it and see what effect it might have.

Don't check it after coffee or eating. Have to have my morning coffee, but

that's it for me. I keep reading some good benefits for it, but it's hard to know what to believe sometimes.

My wife and I got back out yesterday and walked over 3 miles.

I think about half of the northern hemisphere had the same idea. We went to a local county park that has an awesome walking path, along with a dog park, skateboard park, etc. The place was a zoo. But, once we finally were able to park our car (that was a job, finding a parking spot), we got in a super-good walk.

I eat lots of salads, many times per week. I don't 100% cut out beef, but I bet I may eat beef once per month, maybe. When we do have meat it is either chicken (boneless breasts) or we use ground turkey for recipes that would traditionally call for beef. We've been using this type of diet for ?? years.

My biggest thing is to get out and walk. Now with nicer weather upon us, we'll be doing a lot more of it.

I also need to stay the course with my workouts. I have a home gym that I enjoy using. It is just a matter of not letting life get crazy and it dictating when I can and cannot exercise.

Re: Yeah.... I do have a pretty good diet. I don't drink Cokes & try to...

As someone who has been in the boat you describe for 30 years you leave out a couple of important factors, your age, height and weight.

But regarding the caffeine, it makes a lot of difference with me. I have learned to like decaf beverages. And using only those lowers my sys/dia by about 5mmHg.

Good reads (I pulled up a couple of sites). I think some celery with...

.... peanut butter would be good. The celery along with the protein, coupled with exercise, should be a good combination. Going to give this a shot, too. I don't want to capitulate to using medication... not yet, anyway.

Yeah, I read some which says it is especially good for men and...

... the prostate situation. I'm over 50 so I keep things like that in mind.

I work from a desk & computer, so I sit, a lot, throughout the day. I end up drinking 3-4 cups of coffee per day often times. I need to give the test a shot, go a week or two without it and check results.

Re: Yeah.... I do have a pretty good diet. I don't drink Cokes & try to...

I'm actually really close to my optimum weight, according to published statistics. I'm in my early/mid-50s and, to be honest, am probably in much better health than the vast majority of people I grew up with. My blood pressure has always been low-high my entire life. Getting readings of 120s/70s and 80s has been the norm for me. It has just been over the past 8-10 years that my readings have crept up into the 130s/80s and 90s range, on a fairly regular basis.

I've had some bad days where I've gotten even higher readings, but those are by far the exception rather than the norm. I just want to manage it before it starts managing me.

Exercise definitely helps, along with the green drinks OTD espouses.......

helps keep mine surprisingly normal for being such a fat arse.

Cut out all booze; get some weight off with exercise. Not rocket science

and never see an old fat person so ditch sweets or replace with fruit. Love coffee but started cutting it in half with decaf and that helped. The older we get the harder it is to shed poundage but there is no shortcut to reducing blood pressure. Do it. You'll feel 100% better.

My wife is pretty good about the smoothies and such. I've done...

... them a bit. We've made them with the blender, using kale, different fruits like strawberries, blueberries, and using only soy milk or almond milk and maybe add some protein powder.

My weight is fine. I've never had any problems dealing with weight...

... my entire life. If anything, I've been too thin for most of my life. That has played well into my mid-life years. I do have to manage things more so, now. I started getting a pooch on my gut, which is something I never had before. Exercise will quickly get rid of it, though.

It is just my blood pressure that is becoming a concern for me. I think that if I do exercise regularly, though, I will probably start seeing it drop within 30-45 days, or at least I hope so.

Get a Vitamix................

I just had a spinach, carrot, apple, tangelo, strawberry smoothie for lunch. I'm not going to lie, I don't love 'em, but its a quick and easy way to scarf down some fiber and nutrition. I just put all that crap in the Vitamix with some water, and that bad boy turns it all into juice. I really want to incorporate some gin into the mix.

I highly recommend Prancercise.....

Is that where she chases you and the longer you don't let her...

... catch you, the more calories you burn and the more you exercise your heart and get your blood running through your arteries? I could see how one would be able to run for long periods of time, being chased like that.
