I get that the narrative has always been that Bobo always runs the ball (and specifically up the gut) on 2nd & long, but I just haven't seen that so far this season. Just did a quick look at the play-by-play from Saturday's game and found all the 2nd & long plays (7 or more yards) to see what we did.
First Half
1st series: 2nd & 11- 2 yard pass to Bowers (followed by a 11-yard pass to McConkey to convert).
2nd series: 1st down Beck overthrew a wide open Delp down the middle. Fantastic play call, poor execution. 2nd down & 10, we throw it again, and it's a downfield crossing route, as we scrimmaged from our 34, and Auburn picked it off on our 48.
4th series: 2nd & 8- Beck completes one for 26 yards down the sideline to MRJ. Later in the same drive, we faced 2nd & 11 and 3rd & 11, and Beck threw both times incomplete for Bowers in the end zone.
5th series: 2nd & 8- Beck throws incomplete.
Second Half
2nd series: 2nd & 11 (after the Edwards near-fumble)- Beck passes complete to Lovett for 5 yards.
3rd series: 2nd & 12 (after a 2-yard loss on a pass to Bowers)- Beck scrambles for 7 yards, so not a designed run. Later, 2nd & 10, we try the QB draw with Beck for no gain. So there's one designed 2nd & long run.
4th series: 2nd & 9- Beck passes incomplete. Later, after the illegal touching penalty negated Bowers' second straight one-handed catch, we had either 2nd & 10 or 15 (unclear), and passed to McConkey for a 2-yard loss.
5th series: 2nd & 12- Beck passes incomplete. Later, on 2nd & 11, Beck hits Bowers for a 40-yard TD.
SUMMARY
We faced 12 situations of 2nd & 7 or more on Saturday. 11 times, we threw the ball or planned to, counting one scramble from Beck. We only had 1 designed run, and that was an oddly-timed QB draw. So can we PLEASE stop saying that all Bobo does on 2nd & long is run it up the gut. It's simply not the case, or at least is wasn't on Saturday and hasn't seemed to be all season thus far.
EDIT- Here's a link to the play-by-play in case anyone wants to see:
