"The NFL COY ain't good nuff for Bammer" Gump: I loved DeMeco as a player and by all accounts he has a bright future in coaching, but a guy with one year of HC experience in the NFL and no college coaching experience is too risky. The last Bama alum we hired who had no college experience didn’t pan out too well. Plus, I think they move quickly (truthfully the guy is probably already hired) and that doesn’t line up with the probable timeline for an NFL coach in the playoffs. DeMeco might be our guy one day and I’d love to see it happen, but I don’t think it happens this time around.

"We need a coach who can hire a staff with experience in Europe, Africa, Asia, etc." Gump:

Valid points, but Saban has made Bama an international brand. He would not just be recruiting the South. He could overcome the lack of connections by hiring assistants who have those connections.

"Marco has spoken. Long live King Lanning" Gump:

"If we hire Dabo, the Thetans will return and kill us all" Gump:

"Kirby runs this conference like a Don now" Gump:
I hope I'm wrong but we may not have coaches lined up wanting this job as we may think. The person they'd be following is the greatest of ALL TIME and the pressure immense.

Dan Lanning would be great but does anyone really have a clue if the guy wants it? My guess is Kirby's slimey self is already on the phone telling him "don't take the job, you've got it made where you are." And giving him a 100 reasons why he shouldn't take it. We'll all have to wait and see but I will not be surprised one bit if when it's all said and done Lane K is the only one with his hand raised saying "PICK ME!!!".

"Bet the house" Gump: That is where my money is at. Lanning. As I said Demeco has his team in the playoffs in his first year, and he took over a not great team. He has done an amazing job so far, and I think he will continue to do so at Houston. People saying this have no idea if he even wants to coach college, any college. He might just be an NFL guy.

Jean Valjean Gump: Kirby left because Mamma called. If We do decide to call Dabo he is coming home as well.

Kiffin by default Gump:
That's easy to say at this stage of the process...not so much when you're first 5-6 choices say no and you're needing to hire somebody. Do you then say no? 🤔
I doubt we get to that point but if it does saying "no" to Kiffin won't be that easy.

"All aboard the Lane Train" Gump: I mean, I think Lane Kiffin would win at least one National Championship at Alabama.

"Coach Tampering" Gump: I think there has been a plan for sometime and it’s going to make everyone’s head spin with how fast it is.

"Saban got us Lanning" Gump: Knowing how Saban is about planning every little detail, it makes total sense that he would help plan his departure, including his replacement. I think this has been in the works for quite a while. But regardless, we will miss you Coach!

"This was in the works back in December" Gump: There's a flight from Eugene to Tuscaloosa on December 8th.
Yes. There's no proof this was Lanning or his agent, but I can't help but wonder how many flights (on high-end private jets) occur between Eugene and Tuscaloosa.

I suspect this was an early meeting / interview and we'll have confirmation soon that Lanning is the new HC. I've no inside info, but there are a few things like this that seem to indicate this was in place for some time...

RTR!

"The dots are all connecting" Gump: The fact that Lanning basically blew off Texas A&M yet he is in Tuscaloosa tonight makes you wonder how long was this really going on

"It's happening" Gump: Seems like he lost to Washington and a week later in an interview, probably had to sign a NDA, and there was maybe an agreement in principle. Probably a press conference in the a.m.

A-Team Gump: And the news of Saban's retirement was around 5 PM and Lanning is in Tuscaloosa at 9PM and it's a four hour flight.

"Anyone else attending King Dan's coronation?" Gump: If CDL is indeed announced as the next Alabama head coach tomorrow or Fri, all these happenings going on make me think CNS had a lot of input on who and how his succession would take place.

"Saban chose his replacement" Gump:
I’ve got this feeling the “interview” notion is just a formality. Rodney Orr stated that the BoT has know about this since the Rose Bowl, maybe even before. I’m not buying this “I just found out at 2 pm today” stuff from Byrne.

Lanning was most likely earmarked for the position by Coach Saban.

"Lanman's bringing the Ducks with him boys" Gump: If Lanning comes to Bama then the Oregon players would also have 30 days to transfer .

"Mike Norvell sucks, glad we have Lanning" Gump: I don’t know about yall but I’m getting a little offended at all the articles saying we’d look at Mike Norvell. Like we all didn’t see his record before this year. I mean come on. Maybe we whiff on lanning but Mike norvell????

"You wanna be where you can see our troubles are all the same. You wanna go where nobody knows your name" Gump: I have no clue who is interested in the job or who will be hired. Kiffen would be my choice if he is interested. I won't go into them, but there are a few reasons I think Kiffen would be a good fit in this situation.

"The 72 hours is just for celebrating Saban. It's done." Gump:
Maybe... but the average turnaround for Byrne for hiring a new coach after one leaves or is fired is 2 days. Meaning Byrne isnt one to waste time, and in pretty much every case has one already picked out.

I think Byrne is trying to give Saban his victory lap, and trying to make it seem less like something that they have been planning on for awhile.

"Lanning already building his Bammer staff" Gump: What if Lanning is just interviewing the current staff? Saban made some young hires this year and brought in a defensive coordinator that wasn’t going to stay for too long.

Mary Wells Gump: Per Press Box radio show Lanning has been confirmed to be on campus this morning so it looks like he’s our guy.

Geography major Gump: If Lanning is in Tuscaloosa now, then obviously this has been in the works for a while. I doubt he would be able to get from Corvallis to Tuscaloosa on a moment’s notice even with a private jet at his disposal.

"As Saban said, we're favored so we obviously will win, so Lanning done deal" Gump: Lanning has gone from -115 to -300 in a matter of an hour. I think Vegas has Lanning pegged.

Dirty Kirby Gump: I was just listening to Rodney Orr speak on the drew DeArmon show and he said he was talking to a player last night and said the player told him he's already getting calls from Georgia, Ohio State, LSU etc... With today's NIL and transfer portal, we don't have the luxury of waiting very long.

A Beautiful Mind Gump:
Interesting note on how this has been at work for a while.

Alabama has 21 of its 2024 recruits already enrolled

Oregon does not have ANY recruits early enrolled

interesting!!

Future disappointment Gump: Still hoping for Kiffin even with his baggage, but I still think he has matured. With that said, I've warmed to the idea of Lanning, and I think I'll be disappointed at this point if it isn't one of the two minus the left field option of Demeco answering Mama's call if that actually happened...

Cosmos Gump: How about announcing Lane Kiffin at Coach Sagan's announcement!

Last Dance Gump:
Lane Kiffin is the Dennis Rodman of the head coaching world.

He's had four high profile head coaching jobs, he's done well sometimes, he's been a mess at other times. Sometimes he's great, but you never know when he's going to sabotage himself.

He obviously looked much better with a Michael Jordan type to cover up for his late night drinking before a big game...

(Haven't gotten to "Lanning never took a flight" yet)
