I understand that it's not technically a top 12 now, but 5 autos and 7 at large. It's rare (not sure it's even happened) that a P5 (now P4) champ hasn't made the CFP final top 12. Yes, there have been times the highest ranked Group of 5 was not in the CFP top 12.
-AP preseason 1 has always ended up in the final CFP top 12.
-AP preseason 2 and 3 have made the final CFP top 12 80 percent of the time.
-AP preseason 4 and 5 have made the final CFP top 12 70 percent of the time.
-Strangely, number 8 has also made the final CFP top 12 70 percent of the time.
-The 7 and 10 spot are at 50%.
-No other spots in the top 25 have finished at 50% or above.
- 6 and 9 have been unlucky. Number 6 is at 40% and 9 is at 20%.
- Every AP preseason top 25 spot has finished in the final CFP top 12 at least once since the CFP started.
- 11 teams who were unranked, but received votes to start the season, have finished in the top 12 of the CFP final poll.
- 15 teams who were unranked and did not receive votes to start the season have finished in the top 12 of the CFP final poll.
