(That I started writing Sunday night and finished up now)
-Well, I was wrong about today. Really thought we’d show up with our hair on fire and claw out a W. I’m more surprised at how we lost than that we did. It was just a flat game, from the start. I don’t understand that and certainly didn’t see it coming. The lack of fight was bothersome.
-Before anyone says “it’s more of the same” I would suggest that it’s not. It’s been six years since we’ve been swept at home. We’ve gotten swept one time in league play since the start of the 2018 season. We’ve been very good at getting A game on the weekend. I thought that would continue today.
-Back in 2021, what I heard (and said) a lot was “we aren’t the most talented, but we are tough as hell”… I don’t think anyone watching us this weekend would say that. And we’ve got a number of guys from 2021 still on the team.
-Auburn getting swept this weekend is bad news for us. They’re going to fight like hell next weekend.
-We are better than we played. I’ll keep saying that. It’s pretty obvious that our non-conference schedule didn’t do us any favors, but South Carolina scheduled as soft as we did, so I’m not sure how far that goes. We aren’t going to hit 4 or 5 HRs every game in the SEC (or most games) but we can hit better than we did this weekend.
-Not to keep harping on it, but the body language was bad… no need to say any names, but it was evident if you saw the game. Lot of slumped shoulders, hang-dog expressions, stuff like that. I understand the frustration, but I didn’t like how we carried it.
-We were swept to start league play in 2013, 2015, and 2017. Each of those seasons had a series at Georgia Southern in Statesboro, in case anyone wants to debate how beneficial it was to go down there for a non-conference weekend. At any rate, it just doesn’t feel as hopeless, to me anyway, as those seasons. In 13 we’d lost two of three at Ga Southern, had lost a midweeker to Western Carolina, and lost a series to Belmont. In 2015 we’d been swept by Georgia Southern and came very close to losing a series to Longwood. In 2017, we just weren’t old enough. You could see a long season coming before it got started.
This just doesn’t feel like those years did. We are good offensively and good defensively too. We aren’t good on the mound, but I don’t think that we are as bad as this weekend suggests. We’ll see. Maybe this really is going to be 8-22. But I think it’ll be better (12 or 13 wins). Unlikely that we host, and while the last two games were dreadful, I just don’t think this team is dreadful.
