Couple of thoughts on the schedule...

-First, it's good to have it. I've been checking Georgiadogs pretty much daily for the last two weeks, waiting on its announcement. Seems like they were all a little later being released this season.

-It's not an awful non-conference schedule. I wish that we would make an effort to play more “name” teams, especially if we are content with playing Georgia Southern home and home. If we are going to give up a home weekend in the non-conference slate, I think it would be better to play a team like Florida State or Miami or Louisville as opposed to Georgia Southern. But it is what it is. Each time I go to Statesboro I hope it’ll be the last.

-It’ll be nice seeing Ron Polk and UAB. This season actually features two of the same non-conference series in the same place as 2013 (at Georgia Southern and home vs UAB). Interesting two game set that we have with Xavier, also.

-Opening on the road and closing on the road in the league means that we get 5/8 weekends at home, the opposite of 2016. We better bank our wins during that 8 week in-between stretch. Opening at LSU, with our youth, is going to be a very tall order and, while I know that we’ve beaten South Carolina three seasons in a row, I’m positive that the Gamecocks have circled their weekend with us.

-We’ll get Auburn at home for the first time since 2012 after having gone to Auburn twice since then. I’ll look forward to seeing Butch Thompson and especially Doug Sisson. David Perno had some very good assistants while he was here, but I always had the most respect for Sisson. I wish he was still in our dugout.

-I’m disappointed to see that Arkansas is a Thursday – Saturday. That will most likely knock me out of going out there. It’s been since 2012 that we’ve gone to Fayetteville, although the Hogs have come here twice since then. Upon further review, that’s also the same weekend as the Braves opener at the new ballpark, so I’ll be officially 86’ing the Arkansas trip.

-Our last three SEC home series will come against Tim Corbin and Vanderbilt, Kevin O’Sullivan and Florida, and John Cohen and Mississippi State. That’s three coaches who may not have the greatest personalities in the world (although I hear Cohen has really mellowed out over the past few years) but are good of college baseball coaches that you’ll find. Teams like theirs, with very rare exceptions, are such good measuring sticks.

-I was wondering how the tech series would shake out. I assumed that we would play at SunTrust, but didn’t know for sure. There was talk of us playing tech in March or April there before the Braves get started. I’m glad it’s working out this way. I like playing them at the Major League park in May, at night, once it’s gotten a little bit warmer.

-In odd numbered years, I always look to see where that Kentucky trip falls. This time it’s in May. That’s two times in a row we’ve really dodged a bullet there.

-Looks like April will be the toughest month again, although it probably won’t be as bad this past April (which, really, even in the SEC we may not see something like that again for a long time).
