Just getting back from the practice field off of Milledge Avenue.
First things first - nose guard John Atkins was not at practice today as we suggested earlier might be the case.
So far there's been no official word from UGA (and probably won't be until Saturday until we do when we meet with Kirby Smart). Obviously, more on that later when more details become available.
With Atkins out, sophomore DaQuan Hawkins moves into the starting spot at nose.
Watched the wide receivers for a bit.
Jayson Stanley, Riley Ridley and Tyler Simmons all looked great, with each making nice catches during passing drills I was able to see.
While the depth chart is still evolving, we did catch some WR pairings during drills and today it was Terry Godwin and Michael Chigbu up first, followed by Ridley and Isaiah McKenzie, Reggie Davis and Kenneth Towns, followed by Stanley and Matt Price.
For the second straight day, Sony Michel took a few handoffs during run-polish drills before going back to continue his rehab with trainers. He's obviously still wearing the cast over his left forearm, but he's out there and out there working hard.
The running back rotation during run-polish drills was Nick Chubb, Brendan Douglas, Elijah Holyfield and Michel. No, I don't think this is the actual pecking order, but it's simply the order in which the drill was being conducted.
Still no sign of Shaquery Wilson who missed his second straight practice with a bone bruise.
Spent some time with the outside linebackers today.
You can catch some highlights below:
More from Radi-
The wide receivers sure let a lot of balls hit the ground today. Jayson Stanley again caught a very poorly thrown ball but Tyler Simmons dropped an easy one. Granted the balls were wet as the field had just been rained on.
Speaking of the field, the team moved from the two grass fields to one turf field so it was more crowded than normal. The rain made it moister than an oyster out there.
Jim Chaney was slightly annoyed that the wide receivers would not stay wide enough in their routes. A couple of them made an adjustment, which looked exactly like the guys who went before them, but apparently that was all the correction that was needed.
Lorenzo Carter looks scary as usual. He was leading the drills followed by Shaun McGee, who looks to be in the best shape I have seen him. Chauncey Manac didn't look like a dear in the headlights for the first time today.
The most interesting thing I saw was Kirby Smart ask the equipment manager Meshad for arm extention pads. He then jumped into the wide receiver drill, acting like a cornerback. That is just usually something you see a GA do. When he got someone to drop a pass, you could see the competitor in him was loving it, but the coach in him was annoyed. I know. You think I am reading a lot into it. But I will post some pictures of his face. Thrilled, then annoyed.
Michael Barnett continues to impress me.
Tyrique McGhee received a god bit of praise from Mel Tucker.
Watching the linebackers drop into coverage drill, I was not impressed. So very stiff. Natrez Patrick looked better than he did last year, but that isn't saying a lot. Tim Kimbrough looked the best to me in that drill. Jaleel Laguins was having trouble, but tat is to be expected for a freshman.
