in any sport to lose 5 straight to the Nerds. Tomorrow, UGA will be selling tickets at a cheaper price, so look for the code online, but Saturday may be the most important game in CMF's tenure here. Why is he at this point, where a game vs GYech is so important? How?
Well, first, he has lost 4 in a row to the Gnats. I am not sure any coach in any sport since at least 1960 has lost 4 straight to them. Second, we are just 4-3 and cannot afford another loss in the pre-conference slate, unless of course we add another to the win column in the SEC (and don't forget, we have to go to Baylor on jan30 for the SEC-Big12 thing). So, 23 games left, we need 16 wins to get to 20. It will be interesting, but even the old standard "we can win 2 in the SEC tourney" may not get us in the NCAA tourney if we don't have 20 by the end of the season, unless our RPI and SOS are about 30 and 10 respectively, and as we saw last year, the SEC made our RPI and SOS go down.
Lastly, CM has to play better or be benched. I get it by now that CMF will let him try to play his way out of it, but he is shooting just 30% from the field (including 5-10 from 3, so his 2 pointers are really down). He has his normal 1:1 assist:TO rate, and his normal 68% ft%, but his trips to the line are down somewhat as refs seem not to call as many fouls on his trips in the lane. But CMF seems determined to continue playing him at the point, so I will cheer and hope for the best.
One small addendum, GIT is 6-2 (losses to Villanova on the road and a narrow loss to East Middle of the left side of Tennessee, and wins over Tennessee and Arky. They may have the best team they have had in the past 5 years, so our 4 losses are really troubling if they are indeed improved this year.
First Saturday game of the season, so be there and be loud. Support the players and let's beat the NATSfB!
