Just happened to be a coincidence with Devin Obee announcing today….
But a few items of interest.
1. Athens Academy has quite the spread. Ton of room.
Actually had a spring training vibe.
Three batting cages, very nice practice field, new bullpen mound that Georgia built for the school.
UGA also leveled off the practice field for the baseball program.
It’s actually pretty nice.
2. There will be NO exhibition games this year. Logistics made it near impossible and the game in Jacksonville against Florida just didn’t work out.
3. Coach Johnson said he expects the team will be back at Foley shortly after Christmas.
There might some construction going on, but not much.
4. Lots of excitement among the players. Everyone loves the new additions: pitching depth is apparently “night and day” from last year.
5. Charlie Goldstein is expected to start doing some throwing next week.
6. My personal opinion - just looking at guys in the cages and on the field - this is a more athletic group than last year.
7. As far as why Devin Obee picked Georgia, had someone tell me because his dad always wanted him to play for Coach Johnson. Devin is “put together” I’m told. Strong exit velos. Might not be quite as good a hitter as Tre Phelps, but he’s up there. After all, he hit .309 with 16 bombs in the ACC, and was the ACC Tournament MVP.
