We talked to a few people who were at Friday's scrimmage. These folks are not coaches and we are relying on their memories and observations. We won't report any of this as fact but we can pass on what we were told. Georgia did put out a video with clips from the scrimmage and there were some itmes we could glean from that as well.

1. Some of the readers of the DawgVent were at the scrimmage and our sources echoed their posts on the board:
  • Trent Thompson is the man. Multiple players commented on such afterwards and sources confirmed he was running with the first team. Sterling Bailey and Chris Mayes were on the line too.
  • Terry Godwin had a big day. Now we saw Godwin practicing a sweep in practice Wednesday (see our photo gallery) and the video that the University put out after the scrimmage showed what looked like Godwin running the ball out of the backfield, maybe on a sweep. Godwin, Reggie Davis and Jayson Stanley all practiced it so they can all run it.
2. Speaking of the video,
  • Freshmen inside linebackers Natrez Patrick and Roquan Smith were on the field at the same time. They were joined by DL Michael Barnett, DL James DeLoach, OLB Chuks Amaechi, OLB Lorenzo Carter, DB Juwuan Briscoe, DB Kirby Choates, DB Deandre Baker, DB Devin Bowman and DB Johnathan Abram.
  • I saw where at one point it looked like the 2nd team defense was taking on the 1st team offense.
  • Deandre Baker comes flying in at one point on a field goal attempt. Kirby Choates is in there too.
  • A player wearing what appears to be a No. 24 jersey was not dressed out. Not sure who it is but that number belongs to Dominick Sanders.
  • Faton Bauta is acting as the holder on field goal attempts. I was there the day he first started learning to do that and I can say he is much better now. It is a good way to at least get on the field and if Georgia decides to fake it, well, Bauta is a runner too.
  • The video ends with Godwin scoring. [Foreshadowing the season or setting up the sequel? You pick]
  • Christian Payne was standing up at the end of the scrimmage. No assistance. His injury must not have seemed too bad at the time
3. Back to the notes passed along (none of which we witnessed)
  • Reggie Wilkerson worked with the first team.
  • Jake Ganus and Reggie Carter were the first team inside linebackers.
  • Jonathan Abram and Rico McGraw also rotated in with the first team.
  • As reported, the quarterbacks did hit a few deep passes, which is promising considering the lack of those in a couple of the practices. What wasn't reported was they also hit the tight ends a lot, especially over the middle
  • Quayvon Hicks showed up in a green jersey (we mentioned that earlier but just in case you missed it)
  • Rashad Roundtree and Jarvis Wilson were paired up as safeties at one point.
  • Sterling Bailey blocked a pass at the line of scrimmage, knocking the bal up in the air. He proceeded to catch it and run it in for a short touchdown.
  • John Atkins also rotated in with the first team. Josh Dawson was seen with the two's.
  • Shakenneth Williams, Kenneth Towns and Jayson Stanley appeared to to be with the two's or three's (we know they were on the field together, just not certain of what string, although Brendan Douglas and Jackson Harris were out there also)
  • Pat Allen worked at right tackle.

4. Comments from a scrimmage observer who has also seen a number of practices.

"They are tired of hitting each other. They know each other's moves already. The offensive line and defensive line know each other."

"If our offense will hold up like that they did Friday, I tell you what... Brice Ramsey looked good. Faton Bauta looked good with he ones. Greyson [Lambert] looked good with the ones. But put them in there with the threes, and the offensive line can't hold up long enough.

"Pruitt is out there to make a statement. If you take a play off, you are going to be on second or third string." - In regards to Lorenzo Carter on the second team. "He doesn't play around. And neither does Tracy Rocker."

"Trenton Thompson has come to play ball. He is making a statement to these sophomores and juniors and letting them know he is here to play. But the real test is how does he do against another team? We know how he does against guys he sees every day. How will he do against an opponent? Greg Pyke and John Theus aren't going to take it easy on him, but neither are any of the guys he is going to face. It's different against an opponent."

"If our offensive line can hold up and give our quarterbacks time to get the ball to our receivers, we can beat anybody. I don't care which quarterback is in there. If the line holds up, watch out."

"The receivers we got, No. 5, Godwin. That guy is the real deal. Every time he caught the ball he would add 30 or 40 yards downfield. Two of his catches went at least 75 yards for a touchdown. Our receivers on Friday made our safeties and cornerbacks look sick. It was Reggie Davis too. Godwin would catch the ball across the middle and he was just leaving the safeties and cornerbacks. I mean just leaving them in the dust."

"Our kids are ready. They are more focused. I mean they are READY. I can see it in their face and their eyes."

"Keith Marshall, during that scrimmage? Oh my god. He looked great. It's like he has a whole new energy in his body. He was cutting on a dime. It looked like a new Keith Marshall."

"Folks are sleeping on one other guy and that is A.J. Turman. A lot of people will be shocked if they give this kid the opportunity to run the ball. If he does, you are going to see some wonderful things. He is a workhorse. He gives it his all. If Nick or Sony Michel needs some rest, and the put him in there, there won't be any difference. He is doing what Brendan Douglas did last two years ago."

"Georgia right now to me has the best linebacker corps in the nation. Roquan Smith has been lighting them up out there. Reggie Carter is going to be a good one. I bet Georgia is going to have one of the top defenses in the nation., When Rocker starts his rotations, the guys on the second team are as good as the guys on the first team."

"They are waiting on that Alabama game. Especially after what happened it the Dome."

"This defense is going to get back to the Junkyard defense. This is the year for Georgia."
