I lived right across the street from Ken Rosemond back in the day, so I have been here for every basketball coach since that time. With the exception of a very few years, the top level of the basketball program has been consistently mediocre although we have had some quite respectable coaches, Tubby Smith being one. But he didn't stay very long. So, I don't hold out any great hope that a coach can be hired that will knock the top off of the basketball program at UGA for any duration of time that matters. Call me pessimistic if you want, but if 50 years of mediocrity teaches you anything, the expectation that changing coaches will produce a lasting metamorphosis in the program is nothing but wishful thinking. I would love to have a consistent NCAA program like everyone else, but if history teaches us anything, changing basketball coaches is just not the answer at UGA. We need a different strategy than simply changes coaches. Rather than bemoaning our current plight, all of the basketball aficionados need to exert considerable energy and influence to convince President Morehead to get behind and support the basketball program in a way that is consistent with the football program. A new Coliseum would be a nice start.
