as a rebuttal to a profoundly uniformed post yesterday regarding how many points one averages and how that relates to their knowledge and or insight into the game of basketball. A poster, who by his signature, I assume hails from Macon, a city I always felt was a pretty good basketball town, called me out for my having the timidity to offer my opinions about what I see on the basketball court. The gist of his comment to me was since I only averaged 9 ppg (actually 9.6 I believe) on a team that went 13-12 in the sec how could I feel that I had a right, or the knowledge, I assume, to make my case.

I doubt there are many here who share his view regarding ppg and BB IQ. One only has to peruse the playing playing careers of Booby Knight, reserve forward on Army team who "scarcely played", Dean Smith, who never left the bench at Kansas and Coach K, who while playing guard did manage to average 6ppg in 1968-69 to understand the idiocy of the post.

As I said, I imagine most here know that there have been many astute basketball minds that did not inhabit the bodies of great or even good players. Some great players have made great coaches, but many more have not. There are folks who never played beyond hs, or even less that have a good understanding of the game. I've never questioned anyone's opinion based on playing experience, if I happen to know it, but purely on the merits of their argument.

So one has to surmise either the poster is incredibly lacking in any understanding of basic basketball, he has stayed in a Holiday Inn at some point, or he was simply engaging in a personal attack on me believing that pointing out my scoring average would somehow diminish my ability to make informed commentary. Or, perhaps he thought it might embarrass me in some way to point out my modest offensive output. If so, again, he has missed a fundamental concept of basketball regarding the amount of scoring vs value in a basketball game. A possibly interesting side note and additional anecdotal evidence of my point is that after averaging my meager 9ppg I was starting games for a team that made the NBA playoffs the next season.
