Ford F-150 or GM Sierra ? Which would you pick ?

Probably the Sierra. I've always been more of a GMC/Chevy guy. Most folks are Ford when it comes to trucks, considering they're the best selling. They're both interchangeable as far as I'm concerned and both are good trucks.

It appears the nice stuff are standard in GM and not so much with Ford .

My patrol vehicle is a F 150 and there a lot of room in it but I'm kind of mad at GM . I have 120,000 miles on my POV it's a 08 . I like to get another 20,000 but I may trade it .

Actually GM spanks Ford pretty good in trucks. GMC/Silverado are twins with different grills and fenders basically. Total the both of them and it is a GM win easy. Then add the hot selling Colorado and Canyon and Ford is swamped.

Ford has more technology choices (at a price) and more engine choices at the six cylinder level. Aluminum body adds to the load carrying ability but is expensive and still tricky to work on and replace. GM has the new updated 5.3 standard 8 at less than the turbo 3.5 and the 3.5 is noisy as hell. And right now stamped steel costs less so that is a win for GM.

Here my problem with GM and why I want a Ford :

I had problems with with a oil cylinder that almost ruin the motor just over 100,000 miles . When I notice the problem my motor would shake and cab would shake . I could be in line and waiting at the drive thru and would really notice it . Even in park . They replace the cylinder and said it was warranty for a year or 12,000 miles .

The service manger pretty much told me pretty soon I would have to make an expensive choice new motor or new truck .

I did research and pretty much all GM motors have this problem . Some at 50,000 some at 127,000 .

I have had three patrol vehicles GM and Ford and charger . I have a F 150 and even the basics one is nice but if I want more option it will cost more . On the flip side GM option are standard.

I like the Ford because I have 50,000 miles and no problems . I drive it hard . I'm over 1000,000 in my POV and would like to get 20,000 more miles to 40,000.

But all the recalls also has me leaning .

All due respect but that is complete azz hoseshit. I drive an F150 company vehicle and it is fine. But the longest lasting, most reliable engine proven by recent statistics is a 5.3 L GM engine which is staple in all GM full size trucks and SUV's. LOL! I ran the largest privately owned automotive chain in America for over 30 years. We had Ford, import and Chevy franchises. The local dealership where I got my company vehicles was a Chevy so they replaced my Silverado pickup every 20K miles and I put a ton of miles on Company rrucks, I drove over 200 Silverado trucks and my wife got a new Tahoe or Suburban every two years so she drove probably 25 and put 30 K a year on them. I NEVER put a Silverado in the shop for anything. I had one with squeaking brakes once upon a time but the mechanic told me you have been driving on a dirt road and it was true, dust on the brakes and it stopped in a couple days. My wife's Suburban dropped a tranny once. Close to 300 full size Chevys and one freaking tranny and ZERO SILVERADO's EVER in the shop! NONE! When I retired my wife was given a new Tahoe, it currently has close to 300K miles and we have replaced an alternator and a water pump and it runs like new! The 5.3 L is the same small block Chevy with tons of upgrades over the years that set the standard for American V8 engines. First a 265, then 283, then 327 and 350 and it is as bullet proof as mechanical equipment gets. I ain't in love with any brand of vehicle but the small block Chevy is God's gift to motoring mister! I know, I'm in the business and anyone who says different is nuts. The Ford small block (289/302) was a gem too. Both wound up so tight they used some oil years and years ago but that was never a problem and that was corrected close to 40 years ago. I don't get emotional over a damn vehicle but statistics prove over and over again that small block Chevys are the complete GOAT as far as being durable. It is no big deal in the business for Chevy trucks and Tahoes to have original engines with excess of 400 and yes 500K miles traded in at dealerships. I like certain things about the f150 better but longest lasting engines, it's 5'3 L all day long. Long live the small block Chevy!

I've been truck shopping for a few weeks now. Lots of test drives, option checking, pricing. etc. If you're going with a 2016 I'm pretty much convinced at this point to go with a Ram. Their 2016 is some kind of nice truck.

So you are RedJim? We agree that Chevy is the best. I wondered where you went. High tailed it.

What was the oil cylinder doing? You talking of oil pump? Never heard of this. I bet you don't have much mechanical ability.

Bud its a DODGE. in a year it will look 20 years old

Owned 6-250s and a 350 dually. Friends have dodges and Chevys. I've picked a ford 7 times now in the past 8 years and have been happy each time. Chevys tend to ride more cushy than fords. If you plan to keep the truck more than 6/100,000 or pull routinely more than 7,500 lbs get a 6.7 ford f250 diesel. Just a hell of an engine-stout as can be. I routinely pull a 18,000 lb 40 foot trailer with 33 ft cabin cruiser and put the cruise on 75 and get 11 mpg. That 6.7 diesel is the strongest diesel I've ever seen in a regular light truck including the Cummings 6.7. Gets about 18.5 on highway and 15.5 in city. The v6 only averages about 18 total city and highway combined (multiple friends with them) so the $ for gas isn't that much different. Hope this helps.

I have had f-150's all my life and currently have a Platinum as well. I love it. Before I bought this I decided to save a little money and purchased a Dodge Ram. You can tell a major difference in quality from the seats to the interior. Everything in the Ram just felt cheap and like It could break if I turned the knob too hard of pressed the button too hard. Id go either Ford or GMS but Id def forget about the Ram! Youll regret it... I did!

Ram out of the question. Ford nice option cost $$$ whereas those things come standard on GM . V8s aren't as costly on GM as Ford .

Motor Trend named the new Colorado Truck of the year when it first came out. Truck Trend did as well. And then named it again this year. Twice in a row. Even though the new mid size Toyota just came out. Both named the Ram Truck of the year for two years in a row including the year the new 2015 came out. So this is all very open to interpretation. The Silverado was named truck of the year by several publications in 2014. Some times I think they return favors...in exchange for ad dollars. I REPEAT, I AM IN THE BUSINESS! I think some here get their politics crossed up with acumen. LOL! There are good and bad in all the trucks. Consumer reports gave the Silverado high, high, high ratings for low customer complaints, gave the F150 average ratings and completely panned the Ram, this was over a 3 year period. I don't think many people even pay attention. In the real world, I never put a full size Chevy pickup in the shop having driven over 200 of them. I once upon a time had an F150 with the famous motorcycle co package since I was in Houston when I picked up a new co truck. It mysteriously WOULD NOT FIRE and CRANK at the worst times and I turned it back after 2k miles. Yet we, as I recall sold the hell out of F150 pickups that year. Since I retired I have bought a new truck every year, 3 of them Rams. One was as good as any truck I've ever owned, truly a sweet machine. A black hemi. One was a Daytona blue hemi that everything in the world quit in the first 1500 miles, wipers, headlites, and the tranny fluid just erupted on my driveway. The third was a beauty and shined like a diamond in a goat's azz but just did not have that solid as a rock feel like the 2014 Silverado I turned it in for. FWIW, I like the new F150. It has some true high tech marvels and the gas mileage is great. Pricey and the turbo engines are noisy but they are great. And a couple of the major mags named the full size F150 Truck of the year as it deserves with the step out to aluminum and the tech stuff.

For those of you who call GM down for going broke well, knock yourself out. We had all the franchises at the time. Ford actually went broke first, lol again. The only difference being they were able to borrow money from the big Wall street bankers privately since they were still loaning money at the time. GM lasted too long without going into the street with their hats in their hand, lasting past the time the big banks were loaning money so they had to get the government to guarantee theirs as did Chrysler.

Fun conversation, you guys speculate, I lived it. BTW the worst auto's I found at varying times in our chains were the old AMC, American Motors brands back in the 70's. Mercy. Then the modern day Nissans. The Chrysler stuff uses low grade minor components in some cases but they also have some tough as boots vehicles, particularly the mid size suv's which are like small tanks. 300K, 400K miles.

I think Ford has far surpassed GMC/Chevy in interior/cab design, etc. However, I like the way the GMC looks from the outside. GM needs to revamp the the interiors though and get rid of the silver plastic trim. If I could combine the exterior of the GMC, turbo V6 of ford, and interior of the RAM laramie, I would have have the perfect truck.

I just made a truck purchase about a month ago. a bit about me.

I've owned GMC trucks, I've owned Nissan trucks, and now I own a Ford truck.

I have no die-hard loyalty to any. Really it came down to what I could afford and what I felt most comfortable with driving.

I've always liked the GMC...i know its a Silverado with a different grille, but I've always liked it.

I bought a Ford because of the backseat space. I have a 155lb great dane. I wanted a vehicle that he and my daughters could ride in together. He fits in the ford with plenty to spare.

I also bought the ecoboost engine. I like it. Sure it doesn't have the grunt of the v8 but its a smooth transmission and the power is there when i need it.

Asking people about Ford vs. Chevy could lead to bloodshed but really it should come down to which one you like best. You won't go wrong with either. They're both quality vehicles.
