Funny how the world turns.
Like a lot of people on this board I’ve been following recruiting for years
Got very active with it in the mid 80s. I remember I guess it was 1994 there was a junior hot shot running back in south Georgia Who I think was named Butler. Everybody thought he was gonna be a big deal. He went to Georgia Tech and didn’t ever really do a whole lot.
Late in the recruiting process Coach Ray Goff offered a Senior defensive back at that school whose father happened to be the coach. Being a South Georgia boy himself no doubt Ray knew Sonny
The kid accepts . He was a well regarded prospect Who had other offers a three star by today’s standards most likely.
Some recruiting experts openly speculated that the head coach at the UGA had offered Kirby Smart a scholarship to gain favor with his daddy Sonny. Either way Kirby is considered to be an ok pick up. Maybe a stretch to be truthful . Nobody and I mean nobody thought he was going to be an all SEC type player

We know now Kirby turned out to be a good player.
But what if Goff had not offered him. ?And Kirby had gone to Florida state for instance?
good job coach Goff
