I'm not going to spend a great deal of time on this, but I did have a couple of things to point out. Last year after the Auburn series, in which we were swept and scored 4 runs in the entire series, Stricklin said that he believed in what they were doing and believed that they were going to get things turned around. He's made multiple overtures since then citing his belief that the program is going in the right direction. Privately he conceded last season that the 2016 team would probably take a "step back" due to the number of players we were losing off of the 2015 team. My thought at the time and I said as much here was that he could not afford to take a "step back" and that it wasn't really possible to take a "step back" anyway after failing to qualify for the SECT and finishing sub .500. I wouldn't expect Stricklin to say anything else publicly regarding movement in the "right direction" but I'm not sure that this statement can be demonstrated by anything concrete.
We played our 45th game of the year today. We are now 22-23 and 7-14 in the SEC.
Last year after our 45th game, we were 22-23 and 7-14 in the SEC.
In 2014 after game 45, we were 22-22-1 and 8-13-1 in the SEC.
Today we were swept by Vanderbilt and outscored on the weekend by 26 runs. Last season we were swept at home by Vanderbilt and outscored by 8 runs. In 2014 we were swept at Vanderbilt and outscored by 19 runs.
Over our last three road weekends, we were outscored 76-15. We were outscored by an average of 6.7 runs in those 9 games.
Twice this season we have played a road series and scored 3 runs over the entire weekend. We are now tied with Missouri (who swept us last year) in the standings and that is our final road trip. We'll see a 5th year senior pitcher who lead the conference in innings last year (I believe) and one of the top 5 sophomore arms in the entire country the first two days of that weekend.
This weekend marked the 27th SEC series that Scott Stricklin has coached. This was the 9th time that we've failed to win one game in a league series. 7 were three game sweeps, 1 was dropped 2 games with a tie, another was a two game home sweep with game three cancelled due to rain. Stricklin has swept one SEC team in 27 tries.
In 2014, we lost 6 of 10 league series.
In 2015 we lost 7 of 10 league series.
This weekend marked the 5th series loss in 7 tries this season. With three weekends remaining, we'll have to win each of the remaining series to best the high water mark. We will have to win each of our remaining SEC games to finish +.500 in the conference. We will have to finish 7-4 to finish above .500 for the first time ever under Scott Stricklin.
Four of our top five hitters in terms of batting average will (almost certainly) not be in the 2017 team. Four of our top five pitchers in terms of innings thrown will (very likely) not be in the 2017 team.
If any of this seems demonstrative of a program moving in the right direction, please let me know. I am not trying to be hostile with this next statement, but if you believe that we are indeed moving in the right direction and Scott Stricklin is the man to fix it, please let me know.... If you think he can or will win here, please let me know. I would love to hear out the thought process and figure out what I'm missing.
