You are not looking at it wrong.
According to ourworldindata, which was updated at 11:00 London time today:
USA has 392 deaths per million in population. Sweden has 536 deaths per million in population.
Worldometer (Updated about 30 minutes ago) at has it as:
402 for USA
538 for Sweden

Not sure where “3 deaths per million” came from.
Maybe he means for yesterday only? But those “3 per million” would still be wrong in that case. And not all the numbers have been reported yet.
