If we are truly a nation that separates church and state, then what God "says" truly doesn't matter from a legal perspective when defining marriage. In my opinion, the institution of marriage was rendered meaningless by society with the spike in divorces. Hell, it's nothing more than another way for the government to regulate our lives and charge a fee for doing so. My wife and I don't need a piece of paper, govt official, or any religion to help us understand our feelings for each other or to proclaim ourselves married/husband & wife.
