I miss those days when everyone was steely invincible...or so we thought.

things always just seemed to work out...
I hit wall about 10 yrs ago...long arm Mr Law tried to rain on perpetual party...
That, and loss of good friends who helped me stay in zones I like...

February 2012 ...

Totaled car. Crushed heel bone. 2 rods 10 screws in foot. Has healed up pretty well, for as serious as it was, but couldn't work for 4 months. Worked for myself so no unemployment. Crushed more than my heel - crushed me. Still digging out, but getting there.

Shattered my little fantasy world - that's for damn sure.

I think about the time you hit the early 40s, you either experience or...

see other people experience the consequences of doing the things luck got you out of for years. Around that age, you generally also see a friend have a life experience you always assumed only happened to other people you don't know.

Knowledge and experience break down that invincibility.

did math...more like 6 yrs...

I've stayed lucky...
not unscathed...

About 12 years ago, I had a conversation with a guy about buying...

disability insurance. I didn't, and still don't, sell any life or health insurance. He was in his late 30s/early 40s and is a self employed engineer who does civil work, site plans, development plans, etc. I was writing some liability and property insurance for him and somehow we started talking about insurance in general. He said he really didn't need disability insurance because as long as he could think, he could work. That was sort of the end of the conversation.

About two years later he fell off of a ladder cleaning out his gutters and royally messed up his back. Had a couple of surgeries and was out of commission for almost 6 months. He couldn't go to his office, sit up to draw anything, meet with anyone, all he could do was either lie in bed or lie back in a recliner at home. He made it through it because his wife is a teacher and her income was enough to pay the basic expenses like groceries, utilities and car payments. He had to pay for everything else out of savings. Damn near broke him.

He said the worst part was having to basically start over in business since most of his clients had to go find another engineer.

Re: About 12 years ago, I had a conversation with a guy about buying...

until recently had disability that would pay off house...
house paid for now, so I cashed in...
if worst comes, I really don't have any family needing care.
I'll be gone... my animals are a concern...

Yeah, this guy was typical engineer, techster, smarter than everyone...

else, had it all figured out. He didn't even want to buy liability insurance. Said he would just bankrupt his company if someone won a big judgement against him. He is a big believer in insurance now.

Someone will take care of your animals.

i had that same conversation with a guy that inspects cranes.

Did not want ANY liability insurance. Just shook my head. I'm an underwriter by trade and thought that was dumb as shit. I asked him if folks he did inspections for required he show proof of insurance. He said no. Doubly dumb as shit.

It ...

f'd me up, but it could have been worse. Had good health insurance, my auto insurance paid all my co-payments that the primary insurance didn't pay so the medical part didn't cost a dime. I had a little back-up, luckily, and my car was also paid for so the money I got for it paid a lot of the bills for the 4 months I was down and then I leased a car when I got back on my feet. Had to use some credit card for a little while, but I'm slowly getting those paid off now. Probably still about 5 grand in the hole from it, but really, that ain't shit. It woke me up, though. I probably needed it.

Re: It ...

Lord Mercy my friend,
I deeper than That without recent injuries...
cut my lip so bad in 1983 crash...
lucky (as I stated) heal very well...
we fools...we would probably do little differently.

I continued to 44 ...

40 is the cutoff for that blind luck karma. Something's gonna f' you up and stop you in your tracks. Luckily, it was just pain and misery and not jail, too.

I've pushed...been too far...paid prices...
still kicking, but nothing in our life is Free....
I hurt like hell, but I swear, will continue to be the pug black.!

Re: It ...

I healed pretty well. I limp after I've really been on it a long time. Gonna have bad arthritis if I live for awhile. Could be worse. Ain't got much more than a small house and a pot to piss in, but I'm above ground. Any day above ground is a good day, poor or rich, IYAM. I guess that's not necessarily true, but I'm not to that point yet.

Yep
