. . . if it by some chance it hasn't been mentioned.
Gaines and Mann have earned four straight .500 SEC records, first time ever and the most at Georgia - not just the most as seniors, but in any 4 year span.
Gaines and Mann have earned the most SEC wins in two, three and four-season spans at Georgia.
Gaines and Mann earned 52 home wins - most ever in a four season stretch, not just the most as seniors, but the most in any 4 year span.
And I think it is fair to say they succeeded with, at times, less than stellar talent on the floor with them.
I guess it would be fun to be like Kentucky, no, it definitely would be, but those are truly historic Bulldog accomplishments by this duo. I don't think we would serve Kenny, Charles, the occasion, or ourselves well unless we took a little time to celebrate this moment.
You know, we got ol' Pope, God bless him, but no one much really wanted to come to Georgia. These guys did want to come to Georgia. and these guys signed on and started getting us some wins.
It wasn't easy for either of them. Kenny certainly paid his dues twice over and I am really proud of him for smiling through it all. Charles was sorely tested for four years as first a point guard in training at the school of hard knocks, then as utility man in training, then accepting a new position and a new role.
I remember shaking Charles hand at a game the Saturday after he committed, he was wearing a Georgia stocking cap. I pointed to it and he just smiled that snaggle tooth smiled and kept smiling and pointing at it and giving a thumbs up. Did he ever take a night off for injury? I don't recall. He was always there - handing out abuse and receiving it (chuckle chuckle - though I was proud of our fans in the arena for never taking shots at Mann as I have seen with other players in previous eras.)
Kenny just smiled and played, he just kept churning out minutes and shutting down offenders. You have to go way back to find as willing, capable, and down right passionate a defender as Kenny - all he wanted to do was win.
I will never forget what these guys have meant to us - and if we eventually reach the heights we all believe this program can, we will owe these guys a great debt.
Well done gents.
