Which area would you chose to be great in ?
It can't be offense or defense, just one area of either, or STs if you want.

I'm going with the DL, easy call for me.
While the OL is extremely important, you still need a QB,RBs and receivers to get great results.
If You've got a great DL it functions pretty much on it's own. If you're truly great at it offenses won't have time or space to set up and execute it's passing game. The running game would be left with outside runs, and even there they'd have a tough time because LBs and safeties wouldn't have to worry about inside run support.

I got on this train of thought dreaming about how dominant We can be on the DL going forward. If We land Brown and another good DL and keep the guys already committed, NOBODY will be able to match up with them by 2017.
Look at this Bama team, they are only great in one area, you guessed it. I think they'll win the title primarily because that line blows up opposing offenses.
We really need to hold onto this defensive staff, it's the key to the playoffs IMO.

Ok, I'm going OL. Fournette, prior to the Bama game, had 792 yards BEFORE contact. In that game, Bama's DL smothered the LSU OL, but a good OL allows a team to run the ball, control the clock, and keep that big DL (and the rest of the D) rested.

Yes, but I said all but one area would be good, with one area being great. So the team wouldn't have glaring weaknesses. I'm looking at one area that could elevate a good team to a championship team.

DBs like we had in the 1980s---Hoage, Sanchez, Flack, Woerner, Welton. If you have lockdown corners and smart, hard-working safeties, even a mediocre pass rush can score coverage sacks. UGA won SO many games with late interceptions and I guaran-dam-tee you not one of those players mentioned above EVER tipped a ball into an opponent's hands.

And they knew how to tackle and pursue a runner.

Amen. Plus they were great on special teams. Woerner on punt and kick returns, Hoage on blocking kicks. Hoage got so good at it the NCAA made a rule to prevent him leapfrogging at the line of scrimmage.
I remember. I was in school then.

It wasn't just Hershel. We were well coached.

Erk Russell was a great coach and should have gotten the HC nod. I think Dooley knew it and didn't want him showing him up.

Wasn't Erk already at Southern when Dooley stepped down? I thought he was, and Erk couldn't leave Southern because the program would have died without his presence.

No, he left after Dooley retired and he didn't get it. At least that's they way I remember it.

I remember Erk leaving in 1981 to go to Southern and winning a championship in 1984 with Tracy Ham at QB. I thought he stepped down from Southern in 1989 to be athletic director.

We also had the best DLs in the program's history in the early to mid 80s.

Maybe so, but I remember more interceptions and passes knocked down than I remember sacks. And I sure remember Terry Hoage, Jeff Sanchez, Tony Flack, and Chris Welton.

A secondary is better when QBs are pressured. Both Jimmy Payne and Freddie Gilbert were great pass rushers, each had double digit sacks and constant pressures. Then Eddie Weaver would sub for them and there was no fall off. Hooge was without doubt as good a defender as I've seen at UGA though.

Yes I remember them. It was the toughest and smartest defense I have ever seen. Ppl think of Erk as the guy with the bloody head but he valued smart football players.

You are correct. I can't believe I don't remember that. I was drunk most of the time, unfortunately. I'm embarrassed. I remember there was a big controversy over Dooley not giving the HC job Erk. I just assumed it was after Dooley decided to retire. Oh well!

I don't think you're wrong. There were some Georgia people who wanted Erk to take the job when Dooley retired. But if I recall correctly, Erk refused the offer because he felt the Southern program would lose support if he left.

Dooley shocked everybody when He named Goff as his replacement. RG didn't have much support other than Dooley. He wasn't well liked.

If you recall in 1980, Auburn tried to guilt Dooley into taking the job there. I always thought Auburn should have offered Erk the job instead of Pat Dye.

Yeah, especially when it was originally announced that none of Dooley's staff was to be considered. Bill Lewis and George Haffner (DC and OC) were upset that a position coach got elevated over them. Bill Lewis quit to go to East Carolina and I think he took the Tech job years later out of spite.

I remember just the opposite. That he took the job because he wasn't going to get Georgia job. But, like I said I was drunk a bunch.
