I've pondered it a tad and He makes perfect sense.
First off He started His coaching career in 1997 as a GA for Saban at Michigan St. He left for a year to be DB coach. Saban brought Him back to coach MSU's DBs. He took Him to LSU as DB coach, and again to The Cleveland Browns as DB coach. Interestingly he replaced Grantham as DC when CTG was fired from The Browns. He immediately vastly improved their defense. He has been DC at 3 stops in The NFL and He was very successful at 2 of them.
So He was hired at Bama to coach DBs, which is a near sacred position on a Saban team. More to the point, I don't know of any defensive coordinator for a Saban coached team who didn't rise from being a DB coach..
Tucker
Muschamp
Kirby
Pruitt....all former DB coaches.
I like the idea of Lupoi, but Tucker makes too much sense to guess anybody else.
