Sorry I’m a little late to the party fellas. I finally found a chance to comment on this great news!
I worked in the Southern Miss Athletic Department (Sports Medicine) during Coach Monken’s tenure at USM from 2013-2015. First off, Kirby just hit a homerun with this hire from so many angles! Monken took a team that was 0-12 the year before he arrived in Hattiesburg and went 1-11, 3-9, then 9-5 and an appearance in CUSA championship game. In 2015, this was the stats of his QB, top 2 RBs, and top 3 WR:
Nick Mullens- 331/521 63.5% 4476yds 38TD/12INT
Jalen Richard- 185 carries/1098 yds 5.9ypa 14TD; 30 Rec/ 284 yds 2TDs
Ito Smith- 171 carries/1128 yds 6.6ypa
10TDS; 49 rec/ 515yds 3TDs
Michael Thomas- 71 rec/ 1391 yds
19.6 ypc 14TDs
Casey Martin- 80 rec/ 925 yds 11.6 ypc 7TDs
DJ Thompson- 55 rec/ 779 yds 14.2 ypc 6TDs
*Mullens (SF), Richard (OAK),
Smith (ATL), and Thomas (LAR) are all on NFL rosters*
Monken knows how to develop players and design an explosive offense and get the ball in his playmakers hands! He is a high character person and great recruiter! We need to enjoy him while we have him because he will be a Power 5 HC next year! The only reason he isn’t a P5 HC right now is because he left USM for the NFL to join one of his best buddies (Dirk Koetter) who took the Tampa Bay Bucs job. I sure hope he stays longer with us because I would love to see what he could do with the talent we have and will continue to bring in. Vandergriff and/or Beck would light it up in this system!
I didn’t initially comment on the hire until it was official, but I’m absolutely pumped at what Coach Monken will do with our offense! Guys like Jamie Newman, George Pickens, Matt Landers, Zamir White, James Cook, and Jermaine Burton are going to kill it in this offense! R.I.P. to all these SEC defenses this year! Just like LSU last year, We Comin’ Boys! Go Dawgs!
