I think Richt's dealing with his Wife's cancer in 08 had a huge impact on preparation. He was barely mentally in fall camp according to some witnesses.

The problem is 20008 is not the only year Richt has had trouble with preparation. He had trouble preparing this team for the past seven years plus. I've never seen a team so unprepared in so many big games over the years. We weren't even competitive.
There have been recurring issues, that's for sure.
In 2008 We were coming off probably Richt's strongest finish and had every critical player back.
I remember a quote from Richt from Camp that August that really sent up red flags in My noggin. He was being asked about the pressure of having a #1 ranked team for the first time. He said words to the effect He wished He could just sit back and smell the roses. That hardly seemed to come from a man in battle mode.
....and the two most critical along the LOS were Sturdivant at LT and Owens at DT. Both gone after 1st game. Nobody listened to me that the expectations of the season needed to be reset after losing those two. Also starting guard Haverkamp who pushed AL DL around in 07 left team.
