Labels. Why do we have to label each other?

Ever wonder who started the labeling fanaticism our culture revels in? Do we comfort ourselves by labeling our neighbors down the street or folks up in the hills or down in the swamp or over in the next county? Once we label a few groups here and there, we decide what they are like, and we also decide most of the time that we don't want to be like them. We decide we would prefer to not deal with them. We decide we don't want to be around them. Then we seal that labeled file with our decision to hate them. Why are we like that? Is it because we are so intelligent that we understand all the nuances of human behavior and how to anticipate it all in artful detail? Or are we still so primal, that we can't exist without a tribe, team, group, gang, club or banner to brandish about?

every type of the World as we know...is Labelled...
you want to discuss what we did prior...
Stop Trippin or Trip Bettter.....-which one's Pink?

I like the red one. Flashy and doesn't show dirt or blood stains much.

I agree with the OP, but conservative Tea Party member is a label. ignoring my T-Ball setup to include liberals in his good neighbor analogy seemed telling as well.
What I read is a guy trying to make the point that the insulting conservatives who ruled this board through a scorched Earth approach for many years are really good guys who probably don't wish half the country dead.

Appreciate the outreach, but why must we always deal in stereotypes (in many cases, extreme stereotypes, labeled and in the can, no editing allowed)? Are we so programmed by news media and entertainment that we've grown incapable of recognizing gray areas as important parts of "the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth?" Maybe Colonel Jessup nailed it for us. Maybe we "can't handle the truth." Evidently marketing, political and media types don't think we can.

I believe that open and honest (cue meaningful) dialogue can resolve most of our social/societal ills. But we really need to address things locally, then regionally and on to national concurrence. And that would be a huge leg up on improving if not resolving most of our international challenges, while continuing to promote mutually profitable and "people productive" opportunities with other folks around the globe. But, we have to start here within our own families to remove all the discord that we have so willingly "embraced." I'm trying to clean up my act, and I'll likely never be totally comfortable with all the progressions and regressions along life's way, but we all need to try.

You're still being sneaky. Make a statement including progressives in your circle of good neighbors as I've suggested and you'll at least be making overt progress, as of now you're really just playing a game with words.

Halfway is (always has been) a great place to meet and to fix things. Expecting anyone to totally embrace everything you or I do and say and how we do and say it is being a bit too whiny, spoiled, picky and/or rotten, not to mention insecure and self serving. All of us (each one) have insecurities and flaws we prefer not to stock on the front row of our display shelves. My bottom line is to promote effective/productive communication. Surely you don't embrace the arguably entertaining, but definitely tiresome "If you don't completely embrace all I do and say, you hate me" mantra so many of us wave as our greeting card (penned by another) to the world.

You and I have much more in common than either of us has with ANYONE beholding to the top levels of our government. I will always believe that they (top leaders) should be beholding to us (individuals, groups and majority). All (ALL) of our differences can be mended to a functional level. Prejudice, jealousy and greed will NEVER go away nor should those tendencies in all of us be ignored. Those "sins" of our primal nature can be managed through productive communication and effective understanding.

Spoiled. picky, etc...who do you think you're fooling ?
Your goal is likely to get the worst of this board's past restored.
You haven't gone halfway, you clearly harbor the same opinions of progressives you've been spewing here for years.
It's just a matter of when you feel safe in re-asserting your hate filled opinions.

Very few of us have cornered the market on "hate filled opinions." I just want to communicate. You are labeling and filing things away. Out of sight, out of mind? Loving the key words, "spew" and "hate." How do you label your opinion? Enlightened? Visionary? It may be on some topics, not so much on others. We won't know until we try. No "hidden" agenda. Seriously.

I read this board for years, I'd leave quickly once I saw the same ole tone.
Don't think I'm unfamiliar with how The regulars complained about many who disagreed with them too often and got them banned.
That is what made the board such a cess pool. There was no balance, or even 2 sides. It was a group of old boy haters that took control of what was meant to be an open board for civil discussions.
Pardon me if I mistrust your motives. Just post how you welcome progressives if you truly want to end the BS as you claim.

I'm so glad you feel safe here now. We'll all sleep better.

I try to avoid labels (except ingredients in food). If you have a "Progressive" hat or something, then I guess I might assume that your prefer labels over personal merit. I try to be consistent with assessing individuals on a case by case basis. Registered Republican, but I think none of us should have to register with a specific party to qualify for a voter registration card at any level of government. And, while on that subject, I prefer that we all were required to provide a picture ID along with our signature on a voter card to vote in any election at any level. But don't pigeon hole me into a "type" based on just that one topic. If you do, that makes you an uniformed hater.

Team player here, but not a "party platform or die" type. Never have been. Wrote in Obama with Palin as his VP his first time out. I bought in to a real possibility of actual change (not just lip service) in Washington DC, and mistakenly saw each of them as new (though inexperienced) to that world of bribes and payback. Hoped they would be uniquely qualified to "drain that swamp." I saw (still do) Biden and McCain as the same exact person with lots more clones inside the Beltway. Voted for Romney last time. Thought he would be a better fit for our economic challenges at that time and that he would be a little less trusting of the Russians along with a few other bad actors around the globe. Bottom line, I now feel that any POTUS is nothing more than a spokesman for his handlers. And unfortunately, we aren't allowed to vote for those handlers or for the top of the heap influence peddlers. So, we really, really need to learn how to get along with each other and to work out our problems and misunderstandings face-to-face. I'm convinced that the more we depend on someone else to solve our every possible concern, the less we will have any input into the process or the results. Maybe we're there (powerless) already. So be it. But we can still discuss things openly and honestly without tossing hurtful firebombs at each other over many topics that don't directly affect us at all. Life's too short. That is most certain.

You don't mind using ''conservative'' to label. You manage to mention you're a republican, want voter ID and think Obama is a bad POTUS. I don't see a lot of independence in any of that.

That's ok though. I will now take you at your word unless future post convince me it's a ploy to get management's attention away from the board.

And you're a selective reader, but that's okay, too. Most of us are guilty of that at times. And it is equally okay for all of us to have differing perspectives on what passes as news and information. Every person, regardless of his/her experience, age, education, spirituality, profession, general background or ethnicity comes by their perspectives from a unique set of those experiences as well as personality traits that reflect and refract it all over the place. We're all different. Most of us don't want to be, but we are.
