Last Thursday was the most Dawg-centric day I think I've had..

when it comes to being in the company of well known Dawgs.

First, went to Athens to play golf at Athens Country Club. Got there and saw David Greene, D J Shockley and Loran Smith were in our group. Got to the first tee and found out DJ was in our foursome, so I got to spend an entire round of golf with DJ. Greene was in the foursome behind us, so we were able to have some good natured banter with them as well. DJ is an incredibly nice guy and we had a great day on the course. I'm not a golfer so my play was horrific, but it was a best ball format so everyone could contribute. DJ has only been playing for about 3 years. He can crush the ball, but he's not 100% sure where it's going. No one in our group was in any danger of getting a Masters invite, so we all had a great day and no one felt like they were a drag on our foursome (that was especially comforting to me).

Next, we went to football practice. Being that close to the players gives a real appreciation for how big and how fast they are. Tooth was absolutely correct when he said it is amazing how fast paced and physical the practices are. He was also correct in saying it is fairly obvious why the 1s are the 1s and the 2s are the 2s. The scrimmage portion of practice is supposed to be less physical than actual game conditions regarding tackling to the ground, but the players get into it and there is some real hitting going on out there. Theus and a D player got into a fight that lasted a long time, it was not just a few seconds of pushing and shoving. It was so intense and the guys were so big, the coaches couldn't get them apart and finally some of the other players pulled them apart. All three qbs played with the 1s and it looked like Park had the best day, Ramsey next, and Bauta had a tough outing. Ramsey threw the ball well, but he had the most problems with sacks. Park looked great and was much more mobile than Ramsey and hit Mitchell deep right in front of us. I went down and watched Rocker coach the DL. The players really seem to like him and want to play well for him. CMR talked to the entire team at the beginning of practice and then spent pretty much all the rest of the time with the qbs and behind the O during the scrimmage. I really thought I would see more of CMR going around to the different positions and watching what was going on, but I guess the coaches meet and talk about that kind of stuff. Pruitt was as intense as you would imagine and really got after guys who did something he didn't like. There is a lot going on out there and it's hard to really see everything and take in all the activity.

Finally, we went to Loran's house for a cookout. Loran has a very nice house in Five Points, btw. As if going to eat at Loran's house wasn't enough, Charlie Trippi was there and I got to meet him. Trippi is very old, 93 to be exact, and can't hear well, but is still in good shape and gets around well. He is a bourbon drinker and I can now say I've had a drink with Charlie Trippi. Loran and his wife are great hosts and we had a nice meal and a great visit. I would have loved to have stayed longer and Loran asked me to stay and sit on the patio and have another drink but I had the 2 hour drive home.

All in all, a very good day.

Re: going to miss it ,going to The Masters with a friend .I've never been***

Jaman, enjoy every minute. You never know if you'll get the chance again. I don't play golf, but a day at the Masters is one of my favorite things to do. Congrats.

You need to add a couple more like 2 at one time

You die if you finish up without at least one hanging.

I go pretty much every year for a day or two, once you go, you...

will be ruined for going to another golf tournament.

Make sure you take/wear your golf shoes imo

There is no place like it...anywhere. It is literally breathtaking every time you walk out onto the grounds.

Casino and I went to the Thursday round last year. The most beautiful

place I've ever been. Not a golfer (Casino is) but you will never forget the experience. Have a great time! No way you can't.

it's a great time...

i grew up outside of Augusta and have had the pleasure of going to the Masters probably 25 times. I also worked at concessions and trash detail while I was in high school. This year I'm going Saturday and Sunday.

it's changed so much in my life time, but still something that I enjoy doing.

Re: good times*

the best time was working at a beer tent. we were not allowed to take tips and they had the older women who had worked there since Arnold Palmer was "the man". They would fire you on the spot if they caught you taking tips, but you get some rich business guy who's on his 10th beer and he's gonna give you a $5 bill for a $2.50 beer and walk off. We learned to be creative with how we hid tip money. You had to wear a smock so you didn't have access your pockets. Needless to say, cowboy boots, as uncomfortable as they can be when you're on your feet for 12 hours, can store a lot of coins and bills over a days time.

Very, and it sort of fell in my lap, an interesting part of the day was...

before I left that morning I told my Dad about going. He said to tell Loran hello, they lived in the dorm together in Athens. My Dad played baseball and Loran ran track so they both lived in the athletic dorm (Payne Hall back in the late 50s).

When I told Loran my Dad said hello, he went on and on about how much he liked my Dad and how was he, told some stories, etc, etc. Before I left his house, Loran told me to call him and let him know when my Dad and I could come up to a baseball game and we would all go out to eat. It really was almost surreal.

Does he attend Alumni weekends

for former Baseball Players?

May 1st-3rd will be this year's reunion. I don't go every year but when I do I really enjoy meeting former players some way back like Mr. Trippi and so on.

No, he really doesn't get back to Athens much anymore...

He used to go to football games and other stuff, but he says he really has lost interest in doing that kind of thing. I'll tell him about the May 1-3 thing, maybe he'll go back. He's 77 and in pretty good shape, but he really doesn't care much about traveling any more. He's had a beach house at Fripp Island for about 6 years now and has maybe spent 4 nights in it.

I hope you are taking advantage of some of those extra days ...

I love Fripp. Haven't been in years, but I'm sure it is still mellow like it was.

Get an egg salad and a pimento cheese, at least *

Hey ...

Don't wear golf shoes. He is f'n with you. But it can be real slick, slick as ice if it's rained. I went to a rainy Masters one year (think it was maybe '89) and we ended up on the Hill on 16 not watching golf, just watching everybody bust their ass.

I've never stepped foot in the place, Fripp is OK but it has really...

turned into a snooty, private club type place. I used to go down there a lot in the 80s and early 90s and loved it. The restaurant at the marina was a great place to pull up in a boat and eat lunch or supper. In the mid to late 90s, the property owners assoc decided to make the whole place only open to members and renters with amenity cards. Now, you can't even go into the restaurants or shops and buy anything without a membership card or amenity card.

It's not nearly as mellow as it used to be.

Too bad - I think '92, maybe, was the last time I went ...

I figured the people there wouldn't want that kind of DEAL. Apparently I was mistaken.
