were present tonight.
That season, after being swept by Missouri to start league play, we went on the road and swept Tennessee. Then we went to South Carolina and won the first two out there. Stricklin managed a great game in that middle contest, really pushed the right buttons. I drove back from Columbia thinking that we were really on the right track.
We were beaten up, though. Robert Tyler and David Sosebee were on the shelf. That moved everyone up and the reality was that we just didn’t have enough arms. tech came to Athens the following Tuesday. I think most people who followed closely knew we were in some trouble. tech beat us something like 13-5. I understood why and I don’t remember being overly angry about it (I probably was angrier then than I am now thinking back on it). Unfortunately, Stricklin really seemed to flip after that game and we wound up finishing in 13th place in the league. I’m not suggesting either of those will happen now... all I’m saying is that like that night four years ago, we just didn’t have enough arms to win tonight.
Losing to tech sucks, but we shouldn’t over react as fans to tonight.
Couple quick thoughts:
-I love Jack Gowan’s upside, but his next couple outings probably need to come at home in lower pressure spots. Probably didn’t have a choice but to throw him tonight... I hope his confidence is ok.
-I don’t remember the score, but the game was already out of hand when tech had the bases loaded and put on that enormous shift. I didn’t care for that. Just play it conventionally in that spot and don’t invite the kid to steal home because your third baseman is playing behind second base.
-Tough night for Austin Biggar behind the plate.
-It’ll be interesting to see how we handle LF in Lexington. Jernigan has a lot of ability, but it’s a struggle at the plate right now. When Sullivan gets back, I imagine we’ll see some Chaney Rogers in LF against RHPs.
-Gotta flush this one and take care of business in Lexington. Don’t sleep on Kentucky. They’re 0-6, they’ll be way more excited to play us than we are to play them, and they need these games a lot worse than we do. For all the energy and excitement with that LSU series, it’s going to be the polar opposite this weekend, especially on Thursday.
