A few years ago, a very simple thought occurred to me to explain why our basketball team is never more than mediocre or slightly better. The explanation is so simple, that you will laugh out loud when I state it.

We never have players who can shoot the damn ball.

Seriously, it came to me after watching UNC pummel somebody. Here it was: when they got a good shot, they hit a remarkable percentage of them. Then I watched us: We have a team with great athletes but we never shoot worth a crap.

I looked at our stats just now. First I was surprised. I knew Maten was an excellent shooter. He is even better than I thought - 57%. I was pleasantly surprised to see Ogbeide and Edwards also over 50%. Then I saw the rest: Frazier 39% (he's been better, I know), Parker 29%, Jackson 32%, Crump 31%, Kessler 25%. The rest are around 40%. Most of the time we have a team on the floor with 3 players who only have a puncher's chance of scoring. Heave up 3 and 1 may go in. I suspect it has been worse in other years.

Please oh please Santa, send us someone who understands the point of the game.
