Very quickly, let's address the bad: (1) He's close to 60--- however, he seems to be in very good health and has the energy to go at least another 10 years. (2) Yes, he did receive a show-cause penalty at Texas A&M . . . . this was more than 20 years ago, surely this can't suffice for McGarity to not even pick the phone up and call his agent.
Now the good -- he has got Middle Tennessee State positioned to make their THIRD straight NCAA tournament appearance. He also advanced to the Round of 32 in the first two years of this streak. They are currently 21-5 this year. He's already gotten two commitments from two Georgia guys (both 3 stars, but both really good players IMO), and his two assistants do a HELL of a job with recruiting in the southeast (Win Case and Ronnie Hamilton). They have built great relationships with Georgia high school basketball coaches, something Mark Fox just never seemed real interested in doing. Just to give you an idea of how respected Kermit is, here is a quote from assistant coach Win Case on why he chose to work for Kermit,
“When I was trying to decide if I was going to pursue this position I got a call from Bill Self and he just raved about coach Davis,” Case said. “(Self) told me coach Davis was one of the best and he told me I needed to look hard at the position. At that time the position had not been offered, but what coach Self said certainly appealed in terms of having an opportunity to work with a coach who has that type of reputation. Coach Davis has a reputation around the country that is second to none.”
Ole Miss is going to go after him. They have probably already contacted him. Kermit only makes $750K a year, he would jump to the SEC in a heartbeat for a salary that even might make ole Greg McGarity comfortable. The bottom line is that Kermit is a winner, AND WOULD come to UGA (and if it was between Ole Miss and UGA, we get him 10 out of 10 times), and bring his assistants with him that have been successfully recruiting the Southeast. Kermit is not the CEO type of coach, he's a coach that is extremely involved and will coach his butt off every single day.
Mark my words---if we don't have someone contacting his agent VERY soon, we will be losing out on Kermit Davis to Ole Miss. Personally, Hurley is my first choice, but I just don't think McGarity will give him an offer that is so much better than UConn that he would leave the northeast for it. Therefore, lets go after KERMIT!!! Proven winner, tons of experience, and a hell of a staff.
