Obviously I don't post on here very often, but I do enjoy the banter as I am a fellow fan of our beloved university. First off, let me say that I was beyond proud of the Herculean effort put on by the team last night. Fox is without a doubt a great X and O guy. Most of the time out of a TV timeout or a called timeout when we have the ball, we get a good look. Last night when Gaines burned the 3rd TO of the 1st half under the basket they came out and got Maten wide open for a dunk off a JJ Frazier of all people screen.
The players played lights out and the pressure got to them a little bit. Missing the front end of 3 one and ones was tough as well as being up 6, turning the ball over and the Cats running the other way for a bucket, getting fouled and then getting the offensive rebound and cutting the lead to 2. However, the Cats did what they do and closed out the game on a 25-9 run to seal the deal.
So I don't understand Fox at times. On one hand he is a tremendous X and O guy. However, why does he have to X and O other teams with decent talent? I don't get how we lose guys to FSU, Clemson, NC State and Tennessee for example when they have similar minimal basketball tradition in place. I've heard the saying it's not about the X and O, but the Jimmy's and the Joe's, and at times that pertains. In the state, there is no reason to not lock down quality guys and make the NCAA 7-8 out of 10 years. I do not have the expectations that we win a national championship like I try to have for football. But, make the dance win a game or two every other time and I'd be pretty pleased.
The quandary to me is what took him so long to get rid of Johnson and Palmore and bring in Jonas and Rosemond? We were continually losing recruits to calibers of the above mentioned programs. Fox got his extension, so I understand he is here for 3 more years and I don't have a huge issue with it. However, I just don't get how he took so long to make the transition. Did he feel obligated to stick with Palmore and Johnson similarly to how Richt stuck with Martinez?
However, I will give credit in that he mastered a great game plan last night, we got quite a few good looks some of which we weren't able to knock down unfortunately. The talent coming in of Ogbeide, Turtle and Wilridge is nice. The offer lists on all 3 show we went against comparable programs in stature and won. Then the Crump and Harris kids in 16 seem to be the type(s) that will elevate UGA to the NCAA's more often than not. The Maten kid is a stud and Fox has brought him along slowly and he is improving game in and game out. Still don't understand the premise on bringing in the Iduwe kid though as an example of recruiting mishaps. In closing, I see a bright future, unsure why it took so long though and will not for the life of me understand how the team I watched last night is 0-4 v Carolina, Awburn and GT (I know Thornton was out for 1 game).
