ND: The NBA is broken

So let me get this straight: The NBA has 30 teams; 3, maybe 4 of them have a legitimate shot of winning the championship. The season lasts more than 9 months. The Hawks are currently tied for 3rd in the East yet are getting ready to dismantle the team because they know they don't have a snowball's chance in Hell of winning the conference, much less the NBA championship. They are trading key pieces for draft picks in 2019 and beyond. What exactly am I missing here?
