All right, how often does a new coach spend half the press conference praising the prior coach?
A) when the new coach is the hand-picked successor by the previous one from the previous one's staff
B) when the previous coach was a championship winning, beloved, Hall of Fame type guy
Neither scenario is in place here. First, Smart is not from Richt's staff. Second, Richt was pushed aside against his will (fired if you will) and replaced. Smart is not coming in with the idea that he is building on the legacy that Richt started. Instead, he is treating the Richt era as a failure and is planning on replacing everything from the guy that didn't get the job done (Richt) with what he learned from a guy who did (Saban). This isn't an orderly transition of power/changing of the guard but a hostile takeover, with the Saban product displacing and replacing the Bowden product.
Oh, and by the way ... these guys are competitors now. Richt didn't ride into the sunset and retire. Instead, he took another big time job at a power five school: the University of Miami. Richt and Smart are going to be competing with each other for the same players, and I am not merely talking about Eason. While Miami rarely recruited the state of Georgia under previous coaches, now that Richt knows this state like the back of his hand, he will be in this state early and often to plunder it for all the 4 and 5 star recruits he can get his hands on. So why on earth with CKS praise the guy knowing full well that every good thing that he says will wind up in some recruiting video that the 'Canes use against UGA on the recruiting trail?
I'm as big of Dawg fan as there has ever been but I really really hope he fails. Stay classy Kirby
No you aren't. You are a Mark Richt fan. Well, go root for Richt's current team, the Miami Hurricanes. The good news: as virtually no one attends Hurricanes home games even when the program is winning, you will have lots and lots and lots of seats to yourself. You and yours will be able to claim and entire section - for free too! - and then go hit the beach after the game.
