saying that North Korea did not go to the level of brainwashing that she witnessed . She described nothing but indoctrination ,she realized that it was just " insane " . You had to believe the way they said to believe , she was scolded for liking classic literature !

Wow. You might examine your own readiness to believe the spin here.

The article is by a Fox Newser who is three years out of college and has literally 0 credentials, for the record, and, strangely, you can find the same exact article under a different byline (Business Insider, whose reporter is a little less green at least): https://www.insider.com/north-korea-defector-says-columbia-university-reminded-her-kim-regime-2021-6

Should make you wonder who is feeding you this stuff and why it makes you feel the way it does.

I don’t get it. Are you saying she is lying or it is a fabricated story?

I am saying it is anecdotal BS packaged by (someone) and presented by drones on two of the most unreliable media channels out there. I don't begrudge the North Korean the right to her own impressions, but nor do I particularly value them. I do question her agenda. I do marvel that we are talking about it at all.

But it’s a first hand account from someone who suffered through one of the most brutal and secretive regimes in history. So to discount it because you don’t like the message is odd but you are free to do so.

Unreliable ha ha like CNN and NBC are reliable. You must have been indoctrinated as well

That is exactly what I was thinking ... he is a lib and follows lib news , he doesn't get a lot of what is really happening in this country . He probably thinks the southern border is closed , because they said so ... thousands pouring across daily , sad state of affairs !

coulumbia University is One of the most brutal and secretive Regimes in history?

The whole thing That’s presented here is just silly. Her memoir might have more interest.

Pretty sure he meant North Korea not Columbia University.

right, but the article he shared is talking about her experience at Columbia, which is just weird and a little juvenile and rather than shedding light on ... anything... it makes both interviewer and interviewee seem vapid. Okay, maybe she had a shitty TA or something that happens. But good lord...

Typical lefty retort when there’s no valid critique. None of the “news” outlets are great, but FOX is better than CNN and MSNBC, who have become biased, lying caricatures.

I guess what I learned about quotes in my education is not true. I thought that might in that person's exact words. I guess that is just made-up BS. Thanks for letting me know.

you obviously didn’t learn the meaning of “anecdotal.”

Marmot is not going to buy it , he is liberal and that is what they want ... to brainwash kids in school , college or otherwise , . This lady ought to know what brainwashing is ,she endured it in Korea and then was shocked that she had to endure here to get her degree !

I think it’s a viewpoint that is important to listen to but not necessarily an absolute truth no more or less than the staunchly conservative two lawyers that I know that graduated from Columbia.

In other words, it’s probably not good to believe or not believe everything you read. I’m sure some of its true but I’m sure some of it is enhanced for our outrage and enjoyment….just like everything that were given by the media.

This is kind of a non-answer.

Marmot,

I have heard the woman interviewed twice and both times she was very critical of columbia for telling her what to think not how to think critically. Secondly she said their practice of painting one as a racist for expressing love for books that were published many years ago was something they would do in NK or punish someone for something that happened centuries ago,
In NK the people are brainwashed because they have no access to the internet or the outside but she wonders why with all the knowledge Americans have, of communism or authoritative govts, why would Americans go down that crazy path?
If you don't think that is happening in our schools, your head is buried in the sand.

No, you taught me that. You're pretty good at it. ))
so, to continue the lesson - the woman's comments provide anecdotes about her time at Columbia. They are neither verified nor corroborated. Thus, the dictionary definition of anecdotal: "Anecdotal evidence is a factual claim relying only on personal observation, collected in a casual or non-systematic manner."

racist for expressing love for books that were published many years ago was something they would do in NK or punish someone for something that happened centuries ago
As a lover of books, including Jane Austen's books, though I prefer various Brontes, I did a little Google:

FEAR NOT! Austen's works remain a part of the core curriculum at Columbia! https://www.college.columbia.edu/core/content/jane-austen

as well, Columbia University Press recently published (2013) an examination of Austen's enduring popularity: http://cup.columbia.edu/book/why-jane-austen/9780231153904

In sum, I think we have little to fear with Columbia. It does seem that at worst Ms. Pak just had an odd run-in with a poorly-read looney and, making lemonade from lemons has turned it into a punditry tour of right-wing outlets - and, lest you accuse me of being the same sort of looney, I will share with you one of my favorite works of the long-cancelled author, Rudyard Kipling:

The Betrothed

"You must choose between me and your cigar."
-- BREACH OF PROMISE CASE, CIRCA 1885.

Open the old cigar-box, get me a Cuba stout,
For things are running crossways, and Maggie and I are out.

We quarrelled about Havanas -- we fought o'er a good cheroot,
And I knew she is exacting, and she says I am a brute.

Open the old cigar-box -- let me consider a space;
In the soft blue veil of the vapour musing on Maggie's face.

Maggie is pretty to look at -- Maggie's a loving lass,
But the prettiest cheeks must wrinkle, the truest of loves must pass.

There's peace in a Larranaga, there's calm in a Henry Clay;
But the best cigar in an hour is finished and thrown away --

Thrown away for another as perfect and ripe and brown --
But I could not throw away Maggie for fear o' the talk o' the town!

Maggie, my wife at fifty -- grey and dour and old --
With never another Maggie to purchase for love or gold!

And the light of Days that have Been the dark of the Days that Are,
And Love's torch stinking and stale, like the butt of a dead cigar --

The butt of a dead cigar you are bound to keep in your pocket --
With never a new one to light tho' it's charred and black to the socket!

Open the old cigar-box -- let me consider a while.
Here is a mild Manila -- there is a wifely smile.

Which is the better portion -- bondage bought with a ring,
Or a harem of dusky beauties, fifty tied in a string?

Counsellors cunning and silent -- comforters true and tried,
And never a one of the fifty to sneer at a rival bride?

Thought in the early morning, solace in time of woes,
Peace in the hush of the twilight, balm ere my eyelids close,

This will the fifty give me, asking nought in return,
With only a Suttee's passion -- to do their duty and burn.

This will the fifty give me. When they are spent and dead,
Five times other fifties shall be my servants instead.

The furrows of far-off Java, the isles of the Spanish Main,
When they hear my harem is empty will send me my brides again.

I will take no heed to their raiment, nor food for their mouths withal,
So long as the gulls are nesting, so long as the showers fall.

I will scent 'em with best vanilla, with tea will I temper their hides,
And the Moor and the Mormon shall envy who read of the tale of my brides.

For Maggie has written a letter to give me my choice between
The wee little whimpering Love and the great god Nick o' Teen.

And I have been servant of Love for barely a twelvemonth clear,
But I have been Priest of Cabanas a matter of seven year;

And the gloom of my bachelor days is flecked with the cheery light
Of stumps that I burned to Friendship and Pleasure and Work and Fight.

And I turn my eyes to the future that Maggie and I must prove,
But the only light on the marshes is the Will-o'-the-Wisp of Love.

Will it see me safe through my journey or leave me bogged in the mire?
Since a puff of tobacco can cloud it, shall I follow the fitful fire?

Open the old cigar-box -- let me consider anew --
Old friends, and who is Maggie that I should abandon you?

A million surplus Maggies are willing to bear the yoke;
And a woman is only a woman, but a good Cigar is a Smoke.

Light me another Cuba -- I hold to my first-sworn vows.
If Maggie will have no rival, I'll have no Maggie for Spouse!

Yeah, but it does beat listening to a stripper/porn star and a felon lawyer talk about hate and all the bad things a certain individual did. And we did talk and talk and talk but perhaps you are right...a defector from a totalitarian regime should be filed away as unimportant if she goes against the left grain.
