Saw an article in Popular Mechanics years ago...

...where a guy roped his self-propelled mower to a pole. As the mower went around in circles in the yard, the rope wound around the pole and the mower moved closer and closer to the pole. Cut the lawn by itself, but you've got a pole in your yard. Helps to have a round yard with no trees.
