Who do you want give me some positives for both I think both will home run hires.

What has Smart done to deserve a job like UGA? His credentials aren't much different than Muschamps, and we know how that turned out for UF. Very risky hire, if you ask me.

Given just those two I would take Herman all day. He would start out slower in recruiting but would be the better hire long term

What did Mark Richt do to deserve a job like UGA? His credentials were no better than Smart's. Anyone is a risky hire. Try to understand that. You never know how a coach is going to turn out. Donnan had 5 11-plus win seasons at Marshall and a national title. Would you say he worked out? There are no guarantees.

I've gone back and forth on Herman and Smart. Smart knows the SEC better and is likely a better recruiter in this part of the country. Herman has a very successful year of head coaching under his belt, but he did it at Houston against a very soft schedule. So who knows. Smart might be a better fit. Whether he will turn out to be the better coach is anyone's guess, and only time will tell.

The AJC says it's either Smart or Mullen.

How is Smart a home run? We need an offense minded guy. Pruitt has the defense going in the right direction. Smart is from the wrong half of the game.

We need a college head coach with ties to the SEC who is having success and "rising". UGA is THE state school in the 3rd richest recruiting state in the country. I say Mullins or Herman.

Richt came into a UGA job that desperately needed a new direction. Low morale and recruiting resulted in all of our rivals whooping our ass for 10 years. Not the same situation here. Kirby is a BIG gamble right now.

Both seem to have very high potential. Neither have the track record Saban had when Bama hired him or Myer had when he took the OSU job. In that way they both are a bit of pigs in a poke.
I really think both have their pluses, Kirby has all that experience under the best defensive coach while Herman worked wonders with 3 different QBs in OSU's title run, AND he's been great in his first year as a HC, which Kirby hasn't done yet.

Semantics. The fact is Richt was a big time gamble as well at a time when we needed a homerun hire.

Richt WAS a HR hire. Nothing can take away from His early success.
The only real flaw in those first 5 seasons were close losses to UF.

About Smart

Two of the most successful coaches in UGA history were assistants at other schools-Dooley at Auburn and Richt at FSU. Could Smart be the next Dooley or Richt?

UGA made a huge mistake by hiring "one of its own" when Dooley retired. Could Smart be the next Goff?

Defensive coordinators going to big schools have not been as successful in recent years as Offensive coordinators. Could Smart be the next Muschamp?

I could go on. Bottom line is whether Smart or anyone else, its a roll of the dice. I don't see a sure-fire home run hire even being discussed. If UGA is a top 10 job, who are the top 10 candidates not just for the UGA job...but top ten overall best candidates out there? Shouldn't that be our starting point? Smart and the others will still be eager to come if we strike out, but why not look for a swing-for-the-fences hire first?

I don't like the Mullen thing if that is who we're talking too...too much like when Tubbs let OM for AU

Chip kelley would be exciting...the Oklahoma or TCU OC's would be risky but maybe a gem

KS is also inexp but with a D mindset and if Will the thrill is being tossed around as coming here...I'm against that ...

Herman coming off Oscar Meyer's coaching tree is possibly a good idea...ya never know though...

Strong is a strong NO

It's all a risk...no matter who...but it was always gonna be a risk of never elevating play, competing at a higher level, etc, staying with the current MR system...

If everyone loved going 10-3 and beating the Vandy's Ky, GSU, and ULM's of the world...then that's where the difference of standards of what a football coach and the program is supposed to be about.

MR developed a quality program...with minimal success on the field...another coach could do the same with success on the field...most all players of all programs state their coach's influence on personal development...

Are we running a football program or personal development mentorship program?

Most all coaches do both...yet most coaches place a higher premium on winning...

I think MR place a higher premium on personal development and religious values that winning...

I agree 100% dr dawg. Smart may or may not be on that list. But, there should be several others ahead of him. He's not the "home run" hire.

Smart will bring Bill Napier from the Bama staff as the OC. Guy is evidently a pretty good offensive mind.

Any circumstance where Pruitt goes is idiotic!

You're absolutely right. I don't care whose feelings he may have stepped on. He may just be the best young DC in the game right now. We have the #1 pass defense, the #2 red zone defense and the #8 overall defense, and the interior line isn't close to what it will be in the near future. I'm reading Muschamp would be Kirby's choice, that would be a huge step backward.

I've read he would hire Western Kentucky OC Tyson Helton. He's just 36, he runs Petrino's hybrid pro-style offense and His passing game has produced 46 tds to just 6 ints this season.
