I see people with agendas really trying to point out the weaknesses of one player/group/coach on offense as the cause of our problems there.
Let’s start from the top. Coach Bobo I think has been ok to good with game planning and play calling. He had been poor as the coach responsible for the execution of our offense. Two different but related elements of his job.
At QB Beck runs the gamut of crazy good to boneheaded from game to game, series to series and play to play. I do believe he gives us the best chance to succeed the rest of the season and in the playoffs should we get there. That said, his confidence is rattled and he needs to step up mentally to get us there.
The running game is my biggest concern. We are decimated with injuries in our RB room but our OL and TEs have significantly regressed in terms of run blocking. Injuries and continuity affect that but still simply not to the standard of UGA football.
We have a scheme/plan that utilizes receiver depth to be effective. Unfortunately that depth is not where it normally is due to boneheaded off-field behavior and injuries. We are leaning on role player level talents to be go to guys. And they are (like the rest of the offense) maddeningly inconsistent.
Even the TE room…arguably to most consistent/best performing group on our team in recent years…is inconsistent. Blocking there is abhorrent, receiving not much better.
Bottom line is all these groups can be good and have been good…at times. They also have been really bad and can be bad…At times. The issue is that we HAVE to find the right combinations of scheme, preparation and execution to get us playing more consistently. I still believe IF we can get through this weekend and get 3-4 key guys healthy we can be a factor in the playoffs.
All this being said, I think we see some staff changes on that side of the ball and it would not surprise me to see some heavy portal action this off season.
