I know it's preseason, therefore its a time of optimism, but I can't help but see another Mark Fox game plan. If you've watched Fox during his time at Georgia then you've noticed what his style is, play really good defense and score in anyway you can, as long as it doesn't include a perimeter jump shot. Every once in a while Fox gives an individual the green light, Frazier had it in the previous two seasons, and saved us many a game. This year who is that guy? Fox doesn't really recruit great shooters. Sure, there are some guys that can occasionally hit an outside shot, but they are inconsistent at best. This roster has one guy that actually can consistently hit a jumper- Crump, but I get the feeling that Fox is going to find a way not to play him.
Turtle Jackson reminds me a lot of our old point guard Charles Mann. He has good size and is physical, but he can't throw it into the ocean, therefore Fox will love him. I realize that Crump is a tweener and not a true point guard, but ultimately a backcourt of Jackson and Parker means no perimeter shooting or 3 point capacity. It's very difficult to be very good when you're one dimensional offensively. Defenses will pack the lane and dare us to hurt them from the outside, and of course we won't be able to. I like a lot about this team, but the lack of outside shooters and Fox's obstinacy when it comes to line up's, prevents me from being overly optimistic about this season. So, let me guess, we'll have a slow start, lose some games we shouldn't, try to claw our way back during SEC play, but come up a little short, make the NIT, and then lose in the first round. I'd love to believe otherwise, but I've seen it too many times before.
